Penguins

-The Staals are brothers Samuelssons are father and son.

-Keven Veilleux is large.

-The Penguins signed former Flyers/Islanders goaltending prospect Scott Munroe to a one-year two-way contract. In 31 games with Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk of the KHL last season, he had a 9-12-2 record a 3.03 goals against average, an .896 goals against average and one shutout.

-"I learned how to play defence — very good defence — and I worked on my nutrition. You've got to be good off the ice, too, you just can't always go out and party." - Simon Despres on his development.

-“I already have it circled on my calendar, it’s the first thing I looked up.” - New Penguins forward Steve MacIntyre on potentially facing his former team, the Oilers, Oct. 9.

-Happy 54th birthday to former Penguins defenseman Kevin McCarthy. An all-star with the Canucks, McCarthy came to Pittsburgh midway through the 1983-84 season in a trade which sent a draft pick to Vancouver. McCarthy appeared in 31 games for the Penguins that season and scored 20 points. In 1984-85, McCarthy played in 64 games and recorded 19 points. During the 1985 offseason, he joined the Flyers as a free agent. In 95 games with the Penguins, he recorded 39 points. He is currently an assistant coach with the Flyers.

Atlantic Division

-Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger (right) said he's "probably three, three and a half weeks away from being able to train hard" following offseason back surgery. He was limited to three games in the postseason due to his back injury.

Northeast Division

-The Senators signed forward Mika Zibanejad, their first-round from last month's draft, to a three-year entry-level contract.

-The Canadiens re-signed restricted free agent forward Ryan White to a one-year contract worth a total of $625,000. In 27 games last season, he scored five points (two goals, three assists).

Southeast Division

-The Hurricanes signed forward Brandon Sutter to a three-year contract worth a total of $6.2 million. He will have a salary cap hit of $2.067 million. In 82 games last season, Sutter scored 29 points (14 goals, 15 assists).

-EN Says: Sutter is a nice two-way center who can shutdown an opponent's top center. He's a tenacious penalty killer. If he can maintain the form which saw him hit 20 goals two seasons ago, he can be a poor man's Ryan Kesler.

-The Capitals re-signed forward Mathieu Perreault to a one-year two-way contract.

-Former Capitals forward Graham Mink has re-joined the Hershey Bears, the Capitals' AHL affiliate.

Central Division

-Blue Jackets forward Kristian Huselius (right) suffered a torn pectoral muscle while lifting weights. He will have surgery to repair the injury and is expected to be sidelined four to six months. In 39 games last season, he had 23 points (14 goals, nine assists).

Northwest Division

-The Avalanche signed former Predators defenseman Shane O'Brien to a one-year deal worth $1.1 million. In 80 games last season, he recorded nine points (two goals, seven assists).

-EN Says: O'Brien is a fine defenseman assuming you slot him for playing No. 5 or 6 type of minutes. He's a big player who has an edge but he can be inconsistent at times and has occasionally been a distraction for his previous teams off the ice.

-The Flames signed former Senators defenseman Derek Smith to a one-year two-way contract.

Pacific Division

-"I kind of like to picture these players the same way as I picture backup goalies. You don't need them every game, but when you do need them, they're nice to have around.'' - Stars assistant general manager Frank Provenzano on signing former Penguins enforcer Eric Godard (right).
