-Happy 61st birthday to former Penguins forward and captain Orest Kindrachuk (right). Acquired in the 1978 offseason along with Tom Bladon and Ross Lonsberry in a trade which sent a first-round pick to the Flyers, Kindrachuk spent three seasons with the Penguins and served as the team's captain during that entire span. In 1978-79, Kindrachuk appeared in 79 games, led the team with 42 assists and scored 60 points, second-most on the team. In that spring's playoffs, Kindrachuk appeared in seven games and led the team with five points. He played in 52 games in 1979-80 and contributed 46 points. His final season in Pittsburgh was 1980-81. A back injury limited him to 13 games and 12 points. In the 1981 offseason, he joined the Capitals as a free agent. In 144 games with the Penguins, Kindrachuk scored 118 points, 66th-most in franchise history.
Atlantic Division-The Islanders are trying to sign forward John Tavares to a long-term contract before the start of the season. He has one year left on his entry-level contract.
-Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said he expected defenseman Chris Pronger (right) to be ready for his team's season opener Oct. 6. Pronger has been recovering from offseason back surgery.
-Flyers management is clamping down on how their players use Twitter.
-The Devils will find out if defenseman Bryce Salvador is ready to play when he takes a physical Saturday. He missed all of 2010-11 due to a concussion.
-Rangers forward and Pittsburgh native J.T. Miller got into a fight with Carolina's Justin Krueger during a prospect tournament yesterday:
-"I was awful and I let the guys down.” - Canadiens forward Scott Gomez on his 2010-11 season which saw him score a career-low 38 points.
-Former Penguins forward Janne Pesonen (right), former Coyotes/Canadiens/Avalanche goaltender David Aebischer and former Hurricanes/Ducks forward Troy Bodie will attend the Jets' training camp on a tryout basis. Pesonen has spent the past two seasons with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL.
-The Jets will wear a decal on their helmets this season in honor of forward Rick Rypien who passed away last month. Rypien, who never played for the franchise, signed with the Jets as a free agent this offseason.
-Former Penguins and Fox Chapel native forward Bill Thomas has joined the San Antonio Rampage, the Panthers' AHL affiliate.
-Former Penguins forward and assistant coach Bryan Trottier is part of a group trying to purchase the Blues. We're presuming Trottier would instruct the scouting department to only draft superstars in the Brian Bellows mold.
-The Blues and forward Patrik Berglund are going all Journey with their advertising this summer:
-Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews hates children:
-Oilers goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin admitted he signed a few autographs while he served a 15-day prison sentence in Arizona for a drunk driving conviction.
-Wild goaltender Josh Harding will honor Rypien, and former Minnesota forward Derek Boogaard and Pavol Demitra on his mask this season. All three passed away this summer.
Pacific Division-Former Islanders forward Trent Hunter will attend the Ducks' training camp on a tryout basis.
-The Stars are expected to file for bankruptcy in order to expedite a sale to Vancouver businessman Tom Gagliardi.
-"Stress can give you a headache under normal circumstances. When you have a brain injury it's worse. This is why concussions can be misdiagnosed as depression. The brain is like a computer - the more you use it the more stress it feels. When it's injured like that, you need to put your brain in sleep mode." - Kings defenseman Willie Mitchell (right) on head injuries. While a member of the Canucks, Mitchell missed half the 2009-10 season after he was hit into the boards by Evgeni Malkin and struck his head.
