-The Blackhawks are expected to split goaltending duties between Ray Emery and Alex Salak tonight against the Penguins.
-Happy 39th birthday to former Penguins forward Pat Falloon. After being claimed off waivers late in the 1999-2000 season, Falloon appeared in 30 games and scored 13 points. In the 2000 offseason, he joined HC Davos in Switzerland.
-Happy 49th birthday to former Penguins forward Carl Mokosak. A free agent signing in the 1986 offseason, Mokosak's Penguins career amounted to three games, zero points and a minus-4 in 1986-87. In the 1987 offseason, Mokosak signed with the Bruins as a free agent.
-Happy 54th birthday to former Penguins forward Mark Johnson (right). A member of the 1980 United States Olympic hockey team, Johnson was a fourth-round pick by the Penguins in 1977 and spent parts of three seasons with the Penguins. Following the 1980 Winter Olympics, Johnson appeared in 17 games for the Penguins in 1979-80 and scored eight points. In the postseason, he saw action in five games and netted four points. His first full season in the NHL was 1980-81. He played in 73 games and contributed 33 points. In the postseason, he appeared in five games and collected three points. After 46 games and 25 points in 1981-82, Johnson was traded to the North Stars in exchange for a draft pick. In 132 regular season games with the Penguins, Johnson scored 62 points, 116th-most in franchise history. In 10 playoff games, Johnson scored seven points. The son of former Penguins coach "Badger" Bob Johnson, Mark is currently the head coach of Wisconsin's women's team and served as the head coach of the United States's women's team in this year's Olympics.
-Happy 50th birthday to former Penguins goaltender Brian Ford. Acquired midway through the 1984-85 season in a deal which sent Tom Thornbury to the Quebec Nordiques, Ford's Penguins career amounted to eight games, a 2-6-0 record a .836 save percentage and a 6.30 goals against average. He was released in the 1985 offseason.
Atlantic Division-Patrik Elias' overtime goal gave the Devils a 2-1 win against the Rangers.
-Former Penguins forward Petr Sykora scored the Devils' first goal. Fire Ray Shero.
-Defenseman Mark Streit (right) was selected as the 13th captain in Islanders history.
-Streit becomes the first Swiss captain in NHL history.
-The Flyers signed forward Sean Couturier, their first-round pick in this year's draft, to a three-year entry-level contract.
-Rangers forward Brad Richards is dealing with a wonky groin.
-Two assists from former Penguin Colby Armstrong helped the Maple Leafs beat the Flyers, 4-2. Fire Ray Shero.
-If you can imagine such a thing, the Flyers are already involved in a dirty hit. Flyers thug Jody Shelley slammed Toronto's Darryl Boyce from behind into the boards last night:
-Shelley was given a five minute major for the hit and a game misconduct.
-Thinking Out Loud: That is worth a five-game suspension in our book. It'll be interesting to see how new NHL discipline czar Brendan Shanahan handles this.
-Shelley was suspended twice last season, including once for boarding.

-Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty returned to action for the first time since suffering severe head and neck injuries when Boston's Zdeno Chara slammed him into a turnbuckle last season.
-The Bruins demoted forwards Tyler Randell, Yannick Riendeau, Stefan Chaput, Calle Ridderwall and Kyle MacKinnon to Providence. of the AHL and assigned forward Anthony Camara (Saginaw - OHL) to his junior team.
Southeast Division-"I’m not thinking about Hershey. I want to be a Washington Capital.” - Former Penguins forward Chris Bourque (right).
-The Capitals returend Samuel Henley (Val-d'Or - QMJHL), Luke Lockhart (Seattle - WHL), Garrett Ross (Saginaw - OHL) and defenseman James Oligny (Prince Edward Island - QMJHL) to their junior teams.
-The Hurricanes returned forwards Gregory Hofmann (Ambri – Switzerland) and Mattias Lindstrom (Skelleftea – Sweden) to their European teams and assigned forwards Victor Rask (Calgary – WHL), Brody Sutter (Lethbridge – WHL), defensemen Austin Levi (Plymouth – OHL) and Keegan Lowe (Edmonton – WHL) to their junior teams. Defenseman Tyler Ludwig and forward Taylor Stefishen were cut.
-During Tuesday's Predators-Capitals game in Baltimore, fans threw a crab on the ice.
-Alexandre Giroux's overtime goal gave the Blue Jackets a 4-3 win against the Capitals.

-A goal and two assists by Chris Stewart led the Blues past the Lightning, 4-3.

-In the span of a few days, Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa mourned the death of his friend Pavol Demitra and celebrated the birth of his daughter.
-The Blue Jackets signed forward R.J. Umberger (right), a native of a certain area in Western Pennsylvania, to a five-year contract extension worth a total of $23 million. He will have a salary cap hit of $4.6 million. Umberger has one year left on his current contract.
-EN Says: What a wonderful signing for this organization. Umberger serves many roles for this franchise on and off the ice. He serves as a defacto captain in many ways and is capable of contributing in many areas on the ice.
-Blue Jackets goaltender Mark Dekanich (high-ankle sprain) and forward Tomas Kubalik (concussion) are expected to be sidelined for a month and a week respectively.
-Columbus assigned forwards Michael Chaput (Shawinigan - QMJHL), Boone Jenner (Oshawa - OHL), Dalton Smith (Ottawa - OHL) and Lukas Sedlak (Chicoutimi- QMJHL), defensemen Brandon Archibald (Saginaw - OHL) and Austin Madaisky (Kamloops - WHL) and goaltender Mathieu Corbeil (Saint John- QMJHL) and released forwards Wade MacLeod and Mike Thomas.
-Red Wings forward Mike Modano (right) formally announced his retirement. Modano, who also played for the North Stars and Stars, spent 22 season in the NHL. Appearing in 1,499 regular season games, Modano scored 561 goals and 1,374 points, both records for American-born players. He won the Stanley Cup in 1999 with Dallas.
-Modano turned down an offer from the Canucks in the offseason.
-Blues ownership rejected an offer of $167 million to purchase the team.
-Oilers forward Ben Eager is dealing with a concussion.
-The Oilers assigned defensemen Jeremie Blain (Acadie-Bathurst -QMJHL), Brandon Davidson (Regina - WHL), David Musil (Vancouver - WHL) and goaltender Tyler Bunz to Medicine Hat - WHL) to their junior teams.
-The Canucks demoted goaltender Karel St. Laurent to Chicago of the AHL and assigned forward Alexandre Grenier (Halifax - QMJHL) to his junior team.
-Wild forwards Cody Almond (right) and Casey Wellman are each dealing with back injuries.
-The Flames demoted forwards John Armstrong, Bryan Cameron, Justin Dowling, Turner Elson, Ryley Grantham, Ryan Howse, Quintin Laing, Logan MacMillan, Jonathan Rheault, C.J. Severyn (a native of Beaver), Dustin Sylvester, Micth Wahl, defencemen James Martin, John Negrin and goalie Adam Avramenko to Abbotsford of the AHL and assigned forwards Michael Ferland (Brandon - WHL), Patrick Holland (Tri City - WHL) and Joey Leach (Kootenay - WHL) to their junior teams. Forward Blake Gal was released.
-The Avalanche demoted defenseman Mike Brennan and forward Zach Cohen to Lake Erie of the AHL and assigned defensemen Gabriel Beaupre (Val-d’Or - QMJHL), Dillon Donnelly (Shawinigan - QMJHL), Troy Rutkowski (Portland - WHL) and Stephen Silas (Belleville - OHL) to their junior teams. Goaltender Sami Aittokallio was returned to Ilves of the SM-liiga in Finland.
-Two goals by Logan Couture led the Sharks past the Ducks, 6-1.

-Former Islanders/Sabres/Rangers forward Pat LaFontaine, who had his career cut short by head injuries, called for a ban on all head shots.
-The ECHL approved a franchise for San Francisco which will begin in 2012-13.
