Penguins

-Happy 30th birthday to former Penguins forward Tomas Surovy. A fourth-round pick in 2001, Surovy spent parts of four seasons with the Penguins. As a rookie in 2002-03, Surovy appeared in 26 games and scored 11 points. He followed that up in 2003-04 by playing in 47 games and scoring 23 points. Following the 2004-05 lockout, Surovy set career highs in games (53) and points (23) in 2005-06. He joined Lulea in Sweden in the 2006 offseason. In 126 games with the Penguins, Surovy scored 59 points. He is currently a member of CSKA Moskva in the KHL.

Atlantic Division

-Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards each had a goal and an assist for the Rangers in a 4-3 defeat of the Devils.

-Joe Fontana, the mayor of London, Ont. wrote a letter of apology to Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds after a banana was thrown at Simmonds during a preseason game in London Thursday. Simmonds is black.

Northeast Division

-Rich Peverly and Patrice Bergeron each had a goal and two assists for the Bruins in a 6-3 defeat of the Islanders.

-Ryan Miller made 33 saves for the Sabres in a 2-1 win against the Maple Leafs.

-Erik Cole's shootout goal gave the Canadiens a 4-3 win against Senators.

-Montreal's Jarred Tinordi had issues with Ottawa's Zack Smith:

-The Sabres are teaming former Penguins defenseman Jordan Leopold with new defenseman Christian Ehrhoff.

-Buffalo demoted forwards Riley Boychuk, Jacob Lagace, Maxime Legault, Shawn Szydlowski, Travis Turnbull, Mark Voakes, defensemen Alex Biega, Nick Crawford, Corey Fienhage, Matt MacKenzie and goaltender Jeff Jakaitis to Rochester of the AHL.

-Bruins forward Nathan Horton is still recovering from a concussion he suffered in Game 3 of last season's Stanley Cup final.

Southeast Division

-Ryan Shannon scored two goals for the Lightning in a 5-2 defeat of the Panthers.

-Gibsonia native Brandon Saad scored a goal with 3:21 left in regulation for the Blackhawks in a 3-2 win against the Capitals.

-Jake Allen made 23 saves for the Blues in a 3-2 defeat of the Avalanche.

-Oilers forward Ales Hemsky (shoulder) was given medical clearance for contact.

-Edmonton defenseman and former Penguin Ryan Whitney is struggling to recover from offseason ankle surgery.

-The Oilers demoted forwards Cameron Abney, Mark Arcobello, Hunter Tremblay, goaltender David LeNeveu and defenseman Johan Motin to Oklahoma City of the AHL and assigned forwards Travis Ewanyk (Edmonton - WHL) and Drew Czerwonka (Kootenay - WHL) to their junior teams.

Pacific Division

*t's so gratifying to see the "historical hostage takers" fail once again in their never ending quest to tell other people what to do with their property.

Hopefully, after the wrecking ball gets done at the Arena, they will have the green light to destroy St. Nicks in time to widen the new 28.

I was not very happy after this past draft because there were many good forwards available...Saad, Namestnikov, Jurco, etc.

But even seeing the success Saad is having early on...it's hard (impossible) to argue with Joe Morrow. He has the look of a future All-Star.

Scott Harrington appears to be a near sure fire NHLer, as well.

Unless Alex Ponikarovsky is involved, it's a bad bet to second guess Ray Shero.

Do yourself a favor and read this splendid article by James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail about hockey's version of "Moneyball" and how the Penguins' use it.

I love it how the Penguins were the one NHL team willing to be upfront about their use of advanced stats (as if hiding this fact would give anyone an advange) and also how the Flyers are a leading example of inefficient spending.

That's too bad about Kuhnhackl, I hope it's not a Malkin-like injury.

Love that they used Bryzgalov as an example. "This can't be right," says Holmgren, "this entire spreadsheet is all full of cells that read 1975 ... ???"

Considering Phaneuf has been on the wrong end of a hit or two like that, you'd think he'd get it. Or maybe that's why he doesn't. The difference between taking the body and trying to blast someone into next week isn't subtle, but it's an important distinction when they don't or can't see you coming.
