-Happy 31st birthday to current Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik (right). A first-round pick in 2000, Orpik has spent parts of seven seasons with the Penguins. As a rookie in 2002-03, Orpik appeared in seven games and was held without a point. His first full season in the NHL was 2003-04. He played in 79 games, scored 10 points and led the team with 127 penalty minutes. Following the 2004-05 lockout, Orpik played in 64 games, netted nine points and once again led the team with 124 penalty minutes. The 2006-07 season saw Orpik appear in 70 games and record six assists. Oprik played in five postseason games that spring and failed to record a point. In 2007-08, Orpik dressed for 78 games and scored 11 points. In that spring's postseason, appeared in all 20 games and recorded two assists. After re-signing in the offseason, Orpik played in 79 games in 2008-09 and netteded 19 points. In the playoffs, Orpik played in 24 games, contributed four assists and helped the Penguins win the Stanley Cup for the third time in franchise history. In 2009-09, Orpik appeared in 73 games and scored a career-high 25 points. In the postseason, he recorded two assists in 13 games. Orpik appeared in 63 games last season and contributed 13 points. During the postseason, he recorded three assists. Orpik has appeared in 512 regular season games with the Penguins, 13th-most in franchise history, has scored 93 points, 90th-most, and has 529 penalty minutes, 24th-most. In 69 postseason games, he has recorded 11 assists.
-Happy 32nd birthday to current Penguins forward Chris Kunitz. Acquired midway through the 2008-09 season along with Eric Tangradi in a deal which sent Ryan Whitney to the Ducks, Kunitz has spent parts of two seasons with the Penguins. He finished the 2008-09 campaign by appearing in 20 games and scoring 18 points. In that spring's postseason, Kunitz saw action in all 24 games, scored 14 points and helped the franchise win the Stanley Cup for the third time. Injuries limited Kunitz to 50 games and 32 points in 2009-10. During the 2010 playoffs, Kunitz played in 13 games and scored 11 points. Last season, Kunitz appeared in 66 games and scored 48 points. During the postseason, he contributed one goal. In 136 regular season games with the Penguins, Kunitz has scored 98 points, 84th-most in franchise history.. In 37 postseason games, he has scored 26 points.

-Rangers defenseman Marc Staal will not travel with his team to Europe for the preseason.

Barnett (Kamloops- WHL), Reid Boucher (Sarnia - OHL) and Thomas Nesbitt (Ottawa - OHL) were assigned to their junior teams.
-Shorthanded goals by Zdeno Chara and Daniel Paille led the Bruins to a 7-3 win against the Canadiens in Halifax, N.S.
-Sabres forward Brad Boyes was suspended for two games for a hit to the head of Maple Leafs forward Joe Colborne Saturday:
-The Maple Leafs demoted forwards Luca Caputi, Joe Colborne, Jerry D’Amigo, Ryan Hamilton, Marcel Mueller, Kenny Ryan, Greg Scott, Mike Zigomanis, defensemen Jesse Blacker, Jeff Finger, Simon Gysbers, Korbinian Holzer, Juraj Mikus and goaltender Mark Owuya to Toronto of the AHL.
-Cam Ward made 36 saves for the Hurricanes in a 4-0 shutout of the Jets.

-The Hurricanes assigned forwards Nicolas Blanchard, Mike McKenzie, Cedric McNicoll, Jared Staal, Justin Shugg, defensemen Michal Jordan and Rasmus Rissanen to Charlotte of the AHL.
-Shootout goals by Todd Bertuzzi and Henrik Zetterberg led the Red Wings past the Blackhawks, 4-3.

-Red Wings forward Jan Mursak is dealing with a fracture in his left ankle.
-The Predators demoted forwards Taylor Beck, Ryan Flynn, Jani Lajunen, Michael Latta, Juuso Puustinen, Josh Shalla, Robert Slaney, defensemen Taylor Aronson, Victor Bartley, Charles-Olivier Roussel, goaltenders Atte Engren and Chet Pickard to Milwaukee of the AHL.
-The Blue Jackets demoted forwards Oliver Gabriel, Aaron Bogosian, defensemen Anton Blomqvist, Steven Delisle, Dalton Prout and Brent Regner to Springfield of the AHL. Forward Adam Payerl was assigned to Belleville of the OHL while Trevor Ludwig was released.
-Devan Dubnyk made 30 saves for the Oilers in a 3-0 shutout of the Oilers.
-Jean-Sebastian Giguere made 16 saves and led the Avalanche to a 3-0 shutout of the Stars.

-The Wild demoted forwards Kris Foucault, David McIntyre, Carson McMillan, Jarod Palmer, Chad Rau, defensemen Tyler Cuma, Chay Genoway, goaltenders Matt Hackett and Darcy Kuemper to Houston of the AHL. The team also placed forwards Jon DiSalvatore, Warren Peters, Jed Ortmeyer, Jeff Taffe, defenseman Jeff Penner and goaltender Dennis Endras on waivers and released defensemen Jordan Hendry and Kris Fredheim.
