"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.

Today, we look at the Penguins' 2-2 tie against the Flyers, Oct. 6, 1991.

The Penguins opened the home portion of their schedule at the Civic Arena. Just 1:59 into the game, defenseman Paul Stanton fired a wrister from the right circle past goaltender Ron Hextall off assists from right winger Mark Recchi and defenseman Paul Coffey.

Near the halfway mark of the period, the Flyers responded and tied the game, 1-1, when right winger Rick Tocchet beat goaltender Tom Barrasso. Assists went to centers Rod Brind'Amour and Pelle Eklund.

The Flyers took a 2-1 lead at the 15:05 mark when defenseman Steve Duchene scored off a rebound with assists from Eklund and Brind'Amour.

At 8:46 of the second period, right winger Joe Mullen tapped a centering pass in the crease behind Hextall and tied the game. Left winger Phil Bourque and center Mario Lemieux were credited with assists.

Notes:

-Barrasso made 28 saves in the tie.

-The three stars were 1.) Barrasso 2.) Hextall 3.) Mullen.

-Prior to the game, children's television broadcaster Fred Rogers was named as the team's celebrity captain in conjuction with the NHL's 75th anniversary.

-The team opted not to unveil it's banners from the 1990-91 Stanley Cup championship season prior to the game in order to reveal them at a time when head coach Bob Johnson could attend. Johnson was resting at his home in Colorado Springs, Colo. following brain surgery.

-Pregame ceremony:

-Lemieux left for approximately 12 minutes in the third period after Hextall clipped him in the face with his stick. Lemieux required stitches.

-The Penguins' power play went 0 for 8.

-The Flyers' was 0 for 6.

-Quaterback Bubby Brister threw touchdown passes to tight end Eric Green and Barry Foster and led the Steelers to a 21-3 defeat of the Colts at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis.

-In their regular season finale, the Pirates saw pitchers John Smiley, Randy Tomlin and Bill Landrum combine for a five-hit shutout during a 7-0 defeat of the Expos. The National League East champion Pirates finished with a 98-64 record.

-The Pirates set a home attendance record with 2,065,302.
