-James Reimer made 32 saves for the Maple Leafs in a 2-0 shutout of the rival Canadiens. Captain Dion Phaneuf had a goal and an assist for Toronto.

-“It felt unreal. It happened so fast. It was pretty awesome. Hard to explain.” - Toronto's Matthew Lombardi who scored a goal in his first game in nearly a calendar year. Lombardi has not played since the second game of last season due to a concussion.

Southeast Division

-The Hurricanes demoted forward Riley Nash to Charlotte of the AHL.

-Capitals forward Jeff Halpern will skip Saturday's morning skate on account of Yom Kippur but will play that night.

-The Capitals recalled forwards Keith Aucoin and Kyle Greentree from Hershey of the AHL.

-The Jets released forward Troy Bodie.

-The Blue Jackets demoted forward Alexandre Giroux to Springfield of the AHL.

-The Blackhawks recalled forward Brandon Pirri from Rockford of the AHL.

-The Red Wings named defenseman Niklas Kronwall as an alternate captain.

Northwest Division

-The Canucks demoted forward Victor Oreskovich and defenseman Ryan Parent to Chicago of the AHL.

-The Flames named defenseman Mark Giordano as an alternate captain.

-The Wild placed forward Eric Nystrom on waivers.

-Wild forward prospect Aaron Boogaard had a felony charge of third-degree sale of a controlled substance dismissed by a judge. Boogaard was accused of distributing painkillers to his brother, former Wild/Rangers forward Derek Boogaard who died in the summer.

Pacific Division

-The Coyotes signed forward Martin Hanzal (right) to a five-year contract extension worth a total of $15.5 million. He will have a salary cap hit of $3.1 million.

-Kings forward Dustin Penner is dealing with a "lower-body" injury.

-The Stars placed defenseman Adam Pardy (ribs) on injured reserve.

-Dallas signed defenseman Jamie Oleksiak, a first-round pick in this summer's draft, to a three-year entry-level contract.

Smythe Division

-Former Sabres/Oilers/Rangers/Flames forward Ales Kotalik has joined HC Ceske Budejovice of the Czech Extraliga.

-Former Oilers/Bruins/Blues forard Yan Stasstny has joined the Nürnberg Ice Tigers of the DEL in Germany.
