The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 6-2 win against the Flyers, Oct. 10, 1991.
Less than a minute later at 11:18, Trottier scored with a slap shot off the post to to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead off assists from left winger Troy Loney and right winger Joe Mullen.
The Flyers got on the scoreboard and made it 2-1 late in the period at the 17:50 mark when left winger Brad Jones put a puck behind goaltender Tom Barrasso. Center Murray Craven and defenseman Steve Duchesne had assists.
A goal of a wrist shot by Flyers defenseman Kjell Samuelsson at 5:29 of the second period tied the game, 2-2. Right winger Andrei Lomakin had the lone assist.
In less than a minute at 6:08, defenseman Paul Coffey regained the lead for the Penguins and made it 3-2. Assists went to right winger Jaromir Jagr and Phil Bourque.
At the 7:40 mark of the third period, Murphy scored an unassisted goal on a power play to make it 4-2. That proved to be the game winner.
Center Mario Lemieux added an insurance goal at 14:10 to give the Penguins a 5-2 lead. Assists went to Coffey and right winger Mark Recchi.
The Flyers narrowed the lead to 5-3 when center Mike Ricci scored off assists from defenseman Terry Carkner and Duchesne.
Mullen cashed in an empty-net goal at 19:24 to finish the scoring. Left winger Bob Errey had the only assist.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 18 saves in the win.
-The three stars were 1.) Coffey 2. Trottier 3.) Murphy.
-Initially, Coffey was credited with an assist on Mullen's goal but a scoring change erased it. That assist would have tied Coffey with Islanders great Dennis Potvin for the most points by a defenseman in NHL history with 742.
