The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
The Penguins have signed left winger Chris Kunitz to a two-year contract extension worth a total of $7.45 million. He will have a salary cap hit of $3.725 over the course of the deal. He has one year left on his current contract with the same salary cap hit.
In four games this season, Kunitz has recorded one assist. In 140 games with the Penguins, he has scored 99 points. Acquired near the 2009 trade deadline, Kunitz was a member of the franchise's 2009 Stanley Cup championship.
EN Says: Getting Kunitz back for the same cap hit and for a fairly short term is a solid move by Ray Shero. Kunitz has established a chemistry with Sidney Crosby it's been something of a challenge to find compatible linemates to work with Crosby throughout his career.
Kunitz has shown he can flourish without Crosby also as evidenced by his 23-goal effort last season.
The biggest concern with Kunitz is his health. He has dealt with a handful of injuries the past few seasons and he is on the north side of 30.

On a completely different matter, I was a little surprised when they sent Johnson down and kept Vitale up. I have to admit Vitale has looked good, but note that Johnson scored his first the other night for the Wild. Will be interesting to see how each one's season unfolds.
