The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
It's been an interesting 24 hours for Arron Asham.
After knocking out Washington's Jay Beagle and celebrating with a "sleep" gesture, Asham expressed regret:
"That was uncalled for, but you try to get the crowd into it. It was kind of classless on my part. I wish I could take that back, but it's just to get fired up. I was trying to get our team into it."
Also last night, Asham reached out to Beagle through Capitals forward Mike Knuble, a former teammate with the Flyers. Knuble told the Washington Post:
“He said ‘I feel bad, how’s [Beagle] doing?’ and I told him alright and that the ego’s a little bruised more than anything... He said, ‘I was showboating. I got caught in the heat of the moment and I looked stupid’ and he apologized for that. He’s not an idiot, not a clown. He’s going out of his way to apologize when he doesn’t have to say anything, he didn’t have to reach out to me or Jay. He doesn’t have to do anything like that but he stood up and said the showboating wasn’t the right thing to do and wanted to make sure he was okay.”
In the Capitals locker room after the game, Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin called Asham's actions "kind of disrespectful."
Today, Asham responded to Ovechkin by saying:
“I don't know why "Ovie's" talking about disrespect, a guy who throws his stick down and winds his hands up over it. He's just being a hypocrite himself.”

That said, I'm glad he's got the cajones to still call Ovie out for being a showboating ass himself. 95% of NHL players could call Asham out and not be hypocrites. AO is not in that 95%.
