"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-2 loss against the Canadiens, Oct. 26, 1991.
At 14:07 of the second period, center Kirk Muller scored another unassisted power play to extend the Canadiens' lead to 2-0.
Just over a minute later at 15:18, center Jiri Hrdina accounted for the Penguins' only score with an unassisted goal from the slot against goaltender Patrick Roy.
The Canadiens went up 3-1 at 8:47 of the third period when defenseman Mathieu Schneider scored from the left faceoff circle off assists from left winger John Leclair and defenseman Sylvain Lefebvre.
At 13:55, center Denis Savard scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway to give Montreal a 4-1 lead. Left winger Shayne Corson recorded the lone assist.
Notes:
-Barrasso recorded the loss after making 19 saves.
-The three stars were 1.) Savard 2.) Desjardins 3.) Muller.
-Center Ron Francis made his season debut after settling a contract dispute. He played primarily on a line with right winger Joe Mullen and left winger Kevin Stevens.
-Center Mario Lemieux missed his third consecutive games due to back and hip ailments.
-Defenseman Paul Coffey left the game in the second period due to a back ailment.
-The Penguins' all-time record in Montreal dropped to 4-46-5.
