PREGAME
-Greetings from a rainy, chilly day in Pittsburgh. It's gray, cloudy and pretty dang depressing. So naturally, it was the perfect day for Gary Bettman to come to town:

(Gene. J. Puskar/Associated Press)
-On account of rushing here for Bettman's press conference, we don't have any pregame photos of the building exterior. We apologize for breaking your hearts.
-Earlier we did get a sneak peak of the control room for all the music, bells and whistles here at Consol Energy Center:

FIRST PERIOD
18:55: Neal takes a pass at the left point and chucks a wrister at the cage. Nabokov kicks it out.
18:20: Pascal Dupuis lugs the puck into the offensive zone and leaves a drop pass for Kris Letang at the left point. Letang swats a one-timer which Nabokov boots out.
17:51: Kyle Okposo snaps off a wrister from the right wing. Matt Niskanen poke checks it away. Niskanen has done an amazing job with poke checks this year.
15:52: John Tavares snaps off a wrister from the left circle. Brooks Orpik blocks it. They battle for the rebound along hte left wing boards and give each other a little abuse.
14:01: Battling for a puck in front of the Penguins' bench, Brian Rolston trips the great Joe Vitale. That's two minutes. Neal, Letang, Steve Sullivan, Malkin and Chris Kunitz take the ice.
13:49: Neal grips and rips a wrister from the left circle wide to the far side.
12:22: Trade Staal! Wait! What? Niskanen goes in deep on the left wing, spins and deals a pass to Staal in the left circle. Staal snaps off a wrister which beats Nabokov on the far side. The goal horn sounds and the Penguins celebrate but officials immediate wave it off. Replays show Matt Cooke crashing towards the crease and bumping Nabokov's glove hand. It's a legit call. Nabokov couldn't make that save. No goal.
12:01: The Rolston minor is killed. Hard to argue with the Penguins' effort there since they did "score" a goal. Kind of.
11:03: Orpik is called for interference against Michael Grabner. Paul Martin, Staal, Letang and Craig Adams take the ice.
9:54: Tavares snaps off a wrister from the left circle. Fleury eats it up despite having Matt Martin in fron ona screen. Engelland and Martin give the business to Martin for being too close to Fleury.
9:02: Just as the Orpik's minor is killed, Travis Hamonic fires a slapper from the right point. Adams challenges and blocks it.
8:44: Neal lifts a wrister from above the left circle. Nabokov punches it away.
7:56: What in th e world was that? Orpik slams Blake Comeau into the boards and they mix it up. Then P.A. Parentea and Niskanen engage in an impromptu Roman-Greco wrestling match in the left circle of the Penguins' zone. Niskanen actually dropped his gloves. Parenteau just laid on the ice face down and didn't do a thing. Paretneau, Comeau and Niskanen all go the box. Parenteau and Niskanen get roughing minors.Comeau actually gets an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The Penguins' get a power play. Staal, Neal, Letang, Sullivan and Kunitz take the ice.
7:46: Neal snaps off a rising wrister from the left circle. It glances off the cross bar and bounces out. Nabokov had no idea where that was.
6:42: Neal rips a wrister from the right circle wide of the cage.
5:47: Fleury tries to play a puck cleared down ice and simply loses it when he's challenged by Comeau. Comeau tries a backhanded wraparound but Fleury manages to trip him up enough behind the cage to prevent it. What in the world was Fleury doing? He's lucky he didn't get a tripping minor.
5:19: Milan Jurcina loses a puck at the right point of the Penguins' zone and allows it to slide up ice to the Islanders' zone. Staal races him for it. Jurcina dives hoping to knock it away but doesn't get a clean stick on it. Staal recovers and manages to get a wrister on net from the left circle as Streit challenges. Nabokov fights it off.
5:05: Comeau chops a loose puck at the cage from the slot. It flutters up in the air and is gloved by Fleury.
2:10: After a few minutes of stagnant play, Matt Moulson has a wrister from the left point deflected out of play by Malkin.
1:01: There goes the hope for shutout No. 2. Streit makes a nice play at the left point and dodges a check by Arron Asham. Hes sneaks up the left win and chucks a pass to the slot. Okopso gets it on net initially with a re-direction attempt. Fleury kicks that out. There's a rebound in the slot and Frans Nielsen punches it under the left leg of Fleury. A nice, greasy, dirty goal. Fantastic play by Streit to create some space there. Okposo and Streit get assists. Islanders, 1-0.
0:17: After Streit fumble a puck behind his own net, Dupuis tries to jab one in by the right side of the cage. Nabokov holds it out. Tough save.
0:00: End of period. Islanders 1, Penguins 0.
FIRST INTERMISSION

-That was a pretty up and down period. The Penguins controlled the first half. The Islanders had the second.
-James Neal has a full green light with his shot. When he releases it, you have to hold your breath for a moment because it just has a different look coming off his stick than anyone else's.
-The Penguins' power play was pretty strong even if it didn't produce a real goal. It challenged Nabokov quite a bit.
-Mark Streit just add so much to the Islanders when he's in the lineup. He plays in every situation and just settles his team when he has the puck.
-The Penguins have an 8-7 edge in shots.
-Neal leads the game with three.
-Tavares leads the Islanders with two.
-Letang leads the game with a massive 11:06 of ice time.

SECOND PERIOD
18:17: Staal carries the puck into the offensive zone, makes a nifty move by Martin at the right half wall, turns the puck from his forehand to the backhand and snaps off a wrister from the left circle to the far side. It clunks off the far post. So close.

13:51: Malkin smacks a one-timer from the right point wide to the far side.
14:41: The Islanders are called for too many men on the ice. Parenteau will serve the minor.
13:17: Niskanen fires a slapper from the left point. It his Cooke in front and deflects to the right corner.
12:14: Hamonic pounds a slapper from the right point. Vitale challenges, sldies down and blocks it. Oof.

2:45: Niskanen puts a slapper on net from the right wing. Nabokov eats it up. Attendance is announced as 18,461. It is it the team's 217th consecutive sellout.

0:30: Sullivan taps a pass from the left circle to Malkin at the top of the slot. Malkin guns a one-timer wide to the left of the cage.
0:00: End of period. Islanders 1, Penguins 0.
SECOND INTERMISSION

-That was an ugly 20 minutes:

-Just a lot of stagnant play.
-Staal returned during the second period and had five shifts after heading to the locker room.
-Nabokov continues to be solid. He doesn't seem to be fighting the puck much and is rarely out of position.

THIRD PERIOD
19:44: The underrated "Cult of Personality" is played during a stoppage:
19:15: Reasoner deals a pass to Staios at the right point. It hits Matt Martin in front. Martin settles the puck and punches it under Fleury. Another dirty, greasy goal. Staios and Reasoner get assists. Islanders 2-0.
18:31: And what a response. Letang controls the puck at the right point. He fakes a shot and deals a pass to Dupuis down low along the goal line on the right of the cage. Dupuis is able to push it by Nabokov and through the crease. Kunitz crashes in and punches it behidn the empty cage. And yet another dirty, greasy goal. Dupuis and Letang get assists. The "Woo-Hoo!" song is played. Islanders, 2-1.
17:28: The Penguins get a chance to tie the game as Okposo is nabbed for goaltender interterference. He pretty much elbowed Fleury in the mask. Letang, Neal, Kunitz, Sullivan and Malkin take the ice.
16:55: Malkin loses a puck in neutral ice and that allows the speedy Michael Grabner to move up the right wing. He gets by a pake check from letang but can't beat Fleury's poke check. A tough play on a dangerous player.
16:10: Malkin guns a one-timer from the right circle but Jay Padolfo flops down to blocks it. Oof.

13:27: Andrew MacDonald deals apass from the left point to xx on the right point. xxx guns aone-timer which Fleury gloves.

End of game. Mike Lange informs us of Elvis' whereabouts. That lame "PITTTSSSBURRRGHHH" song plays. Penguins 3, Islanders 2.
POSTGAME

-First things first. Evgeni Nabokov left the game due to a lower-body injury.
-Something the Penguins just didn't do at all last season was win a game after trailing for the first two periods. Tonight, they broke a streak dating back to the last days of the Civic Arena. This was a pretty gutsy win for them in that regard. Things looked bleak once the Islanders went up 2-0, but the Penguins rebounded almost immediately and took the two points.
-More of the same from James Neal. He's just a scary man when he shoots the puck right now. He could have had another goal or two were it not for some bad bounces.
-The power play only produced one goal tonight (off five chances) but it came through when it needed too. Neal's goal was a pretty work of art.
-Chris Kunitz continues to show he can contribute without Sidney Crosby at center. He has produced 13 goals in the 39 regular season game he has played since Crosby left the lineup. In the 39 previous games with Crosby, Kunitz had 13. Pretty consistent.
-Matt Niskanen continues to be an all-everything defenseman. He might not eat up minutes the way Paul Martin or Kris Letang does, but he seems to find away to contribute in all three zones on the ice. He won a bunch of one-on-one defensive battles once again and put plenty of shots of towards the net.
-Staal looked like someone who was going to steal the game prior to leaving the game in the second period. He just dominated play when he controlled the puck.
-Evgeni Malkin is now 2 for 2 in shootouts this season. All of a sudden he's an asset.
-Fleury wasn't challenged a great deal. But he came through on a couple of tough "non-saves" with two poke checks. In the third period, when the Penguins had a power play, Michael Grabner, a very dangerous shorthanded player, had a chance off the left wing but Fleury poked the puck away. And of course, Fleury's poke check in the shootout on Tavares secured the win.
-John Tavares was not nearly as impressive in person tonight as he was on television Tuesday. He just didn't control play as much and didn't appear to create a lot of space on his own.
-Nabokov was solid. The Penguins put plenty of rubber on net and he turned away a lot of it. If you want to give him grief on the first goal by Kunitz, fine, but he was helpless on the goal by Neal.
-The Penguins had a 32-19 lead in shots.
-Neal led the game with six.
-Tavares led the Islanders with four.
-Kris Letang led the game with 30:16 of ice time.
-Mark Steit led the Islanders with 27:13.
-The Penguins controlled faceoffs, 38-24 (61 percent).
-The great Joev Vitale was 7 for 8 (88 percent).
-Malkin was 14 for 24 (64 percent).
-Nielsen was 7 for 17 (41 percent).
-Travis Hamonic led the game with five blocked shots.
-Paul Martin led the Penguins with three blocked shots.
-Kunitz moved past Duane Rupp, Andy Bathgate and the great Dick Tarnstrom for 77th place on the team's all-time scoring list. Kunitz and Rupp each have 104 points but Kunitz (46) has more goals than Rupp (21). Bathgate and Tarnstrom each have 103 points.
-Highlights:

| < Prev | Next > |
|---|
Fleury has looked bad on a few things. I cant believe Isles didn't score on that mishnandling behind the net by Fleury. They had TWO excellent chances, one being as good as an empty net.
As I type this, ISles just went up 1-0. Aaargh.
Staaal, Martin look really good for the second game in a row.
Malkin is playing well. But like I usually bring up, he makes major money - 8.6 MEEELYAN dollars. His production needs to go up in real terms, not just intangibles. So hopefully Malkin will deliver today on the scoresheet.
