"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 8-0 loss against the Capitals, Oct. 29, 1991.
A five-on-three power-play goal at 10:00 of the second by center Dale Hunter against goaltender Frank Pietrangelo gave Washington a 2-0 lead. Left winger Dmitri Khristich and defenseman Sylvain Cote recorded assists.
Right winter Peter Bondra increased the lead to 3-0 with a breakaway goal at 14:14. Khristich was given credit for the lone assist.
Kristich made it 4-0 at the 17:48 mark with a goal off assists from Bondra and defenseman Rod Langway.
At the 7:20 mark of the third period, Washington went up 5-0 when left winger Randy Burridge off assists from center Mike Ridley and defenseman Calle Johansson.
Center Dave Tippett increased the lead to 6-0 with his first goal of the season at 12:31. Ciccarreli and center Tim Berglund had assists.
Lalor scored two minutes later at 14:31 to give the Capitals a 7-0 lead. Bondra and Ridley netted assists.
At 15:35, center Michal Pivonka scored the game's final goal to make it 8-0. Assists went to Khristich and Bondra.
Notes:
-Barrasso was credited with the loss after making four saves.
-The three stars were 1.) Kristich 2.) Bondra 3.) Capitals goaltender Don Beaupre.
-Barrasso left the game at 11:50 of the first period after injurying his right glove hand.
-Pietrangelo made 31 saves.
-The Penguins tied a franchise record for worst home defeat in terms of deficit.
-The Penguins were shutout for the first time since Jan. 2, 1989, by the Capitals by an identical score at the Capital Centre in Landover, Md.
-The Penguins were shutout at the Civic Arena for the first time in exactly four years. The Maple Leafs won 4-0, Oct. 29, 1987.
-Center Mario Lemieux returned to the lineup after missing three games due to back and hip ailments.
