The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
PREGAME
This pregame intro is rather fitting given our weather in Western Pennsylvania:

(You should have to salt roads in October.)
-The Penguins' starters are Evgeni Malkin, James Neal, Steve Sullivan, Kris Letang, Paul Martin and Brent Johnson.
-Their scratches are Steve MacIntyre, Zbynek Michalek and Jordan Staal.
-The Maple Leafs' starters are Mikhail Grabovski, Nikolai Kulemin, Clarke MacArthur, Carl Gunnarsson, Dion Phaneuf and Jonas Gustavsson.
-Their scratches are Cody Franson, Colton Orr and Jay Rosehill.
-Root Sports provides the line combinations:

-Are we the only ones wondering why Dustin Jeffrey hasn't gotten an elevated role as a top-six center with the multiple absences of Malkin, Staal and Sidney Crosby?
-The Maple Leafs are wearing their throwback jerseys tonight, presumably without Jake Gardiner's blood:

FIRST PERIOD
18:59: Joffrey Lupul goes in deep with the puck on the left wing corner. Brooks Orpik rides him into the corner boards and separates the puck.
17:26: Ben Lovejoy goes in deep and taps a little wrister on net from the right circle. Gustavsson eats it up.
15:21: Orpik tries to line up Tim Connolly behind the Penguins' net, but Connolly dodges the hit and backhands a nifty pass to the front of the crease. Lupul kneels down and snaps off a shot in tight. Fleury kicks it out.
14:18: Arron Asham takes a pass in the right circle and chops a slapper on net. Gustavsson kicks it out.
13:05: Letang backhands a pass to Martin behind the Penguins and gets mashed into the boards from behind by Philippe Dupuis. Dupuis, no relation to Pascal, gets a boarding minor. Letang is a little shaken after the play but stays in the game. Sullivan, Malkin, Neal, Kris Letang and Chris Kunitz take the ice.
12:31: Letang fumbles a puck at the right point. Tyler Bozak picks it up and flies up ice. He cross the ice and challenges Sullivan on the right wing. Sullivan sticks with him and puts a little simple hip check into Bozak which sends him flying into the boards. Yeesh.
11:34: Niskanen gains the offensive zone on the right wing, slows down at the right circle and snaps off a little wrister on net. Gustavsson kicks it out.
11:05: Philippe Dupuis' minor is killed.
11:03: Malkin is spotted on the bench holding a bag of ice with his left hand:

10:14: Off some hard work down low, Asham tries to jam in a backhander from the right side of the cage. Gustavsson holds it out.
8:44: Malkin pretty much choke slams MacArthur to the ice in the right wing corner of the Penguins' zone. That's two minutes for holding. Martin, RIchard Park, Pascal Dupuis and Orpik take the ice.
8:29: MacArthur leaves a drop pass for Phaneuf at the left point. Phaneuf steps up and hammers a one-timer. Grabovski is in the slot and re-directs it through the five hole of Johnson who challenges the shot well above his crease. A nifty re-direction by Grabovski. Phaneuf and MacArthur get assists. Maple Leafs 1-0.
(What a horrible goal song.)
7:55: Neal deals a nice littp e pass from the left wing corner to Sullivan above the slot. Sullivan cuts across the front of the blue pain and lifts a wrister. Gustavsson stays with the play and robs Sullivan with a nice glove save. Dang.

6:16: Off a turnover by Lovejoy in the neutral zone, MacArthur races up ice splitting Lovejoy and Niskanen. He cuts in on net by a diving Lovjeoy and flicks a wrister on net. Johnson makes the save and gloves the rebound in mid-air. Lovejoy owes Johnson a beer.
5:38: Deryk Engelland booms a slapper from the right point. With no traffic, Gustavsson sees it all the way and eats it it up.
4:20: John-Michael Liles cracks a slapper from the right point. Johnson gets a glove on it despite traffic.
3:52: Kunitz snaps off a wrister from the right circle. Gustavsson kicks it out despite having Park right in his grill.
3:36: Pascal Dupuis whips a big backhander on net from the right circle. Gustavsson fights it off.
2:40: Lovejoy clicks a wrister on net from the right point. It hits a body or two in front and bounces wide.
1:51: Kulemin chops a slapper from the top of the slot. Adams kicks out his right leg and blocks it. Oof.
1:02: Wow. What a defensive play. And for "only" $5 million! Malkin makes a horrible turnover in his own zone. That creates a pseudo two-on-one for Mike Brown and David Steckel. Brown forces a pass from the right wing to Steckel in the slot. Paul Martin dives back and blocks it. With a poke check.
0:00: End of period. Maple Leafs 1, Penguins 0.
FIRST INTERMISSION

-The Penguins were a little lucky to escape that period with only a one-goal deficit. They made a ton of mistakes, especially with regards to turnovers. Their hard work and a few key saves by Brent Johnson offset most of that.
-There was nothing wrong with the Penguins' work rate. They battled hard for pucks and got busy down low in the offensive zone.
-Steve Sullivan is just snake bit. He is position for tons of chances but just can't get the puck to go in.
-Lovejoy had a pretty up and down period.
-Did anyone see Phil Kessel?
-The Penguins outshot the Maple Leafs, 12-6.
-Park, Asham and Liles each lead the game with two blocked shots.

17:02: Komisarek puts a quick one-timer on net from the above the right circle. It hits Letang in the foot and hobbles him a bit.

14:10: Lombardi leads the play up ice in transition creating a two-on-one with Bozak against Letang. Letang slides down to prevent a pass. Lombardi tries to force it to Bozak on the left side of the slot but Neal hustles back and knocks it away with a poke check. Tremendous effort.
11:36: Kunitz rips a wrister from the right circle which hits something in front and deflects out of play.
11:34: Martin turns the puck over in ths Penguins' slot but Letang is there to bail him out.
9:47: Asham settle a bouncing puck in the right circle and lifts a wrister. Gustavsson shrugs it off with his right shoulder.
9:39: Lovejoy chuucsk a wrister from the right point. I thits a body or two in front. Cooke is in front, settles the puck and sweeps it under Gustavsson. Good thing when you go to the net. Replays show Phaneuf completely dogging it on the rebound after Asham's shot. If he puts out a little exertion, the Penguins don't get a chance off Lovejoy's shot. Asham and Lovejoy each get assists. It's Cooke's 99th career point with the Penguins. Maple Leafs 1, Penguins 1.
9:23: Schenn wires a slapper from the right point. Johnson eats it up.

8:30: The Penguins' penalty kill just isn't getting it done tonight. Bozak takes a pass down low and spins towards the crease from the left of the cage. The puck comes loose as Orpik makes contact with Bozak. Connolly is right there to the right of the crease and punches it right into the open cage by Johnson's glove hand with ease. Lupul and Kessel get assists. Maple Leafs 2-1.

2:30: Kuntiz taps a pass to Neal in the left circle. Neal immediately releases a one-timer high and wide of the cage.
1:50: Malkin drives to the net off the left wing but appears to be hooked up by Gardiner. No call.
0:00: End of period. Maple Leafs 2, Penguins 2.
SECOND INTERMISSION

-That was a pretty sloppy period. Lots of mistakes by each team. Lots of mental breakdowns. This looks like a preseason gme with AHL players.
-When did the Penguins' penalty kill become a liability? The Maple Leafs have both of their goals off power plays. And they don't waste time getting them. Both scores have come early in the power play.
-Both of the Penguins' goals are products of just having bodies in front. If you like ugly goals, you like this game.
-Neal has been fairly quiet to this point in terms of offense. He's not getting many good looks at the net.
-The Penguins have a 20-18 lead in shots.
-Asham, Martin and Park each lead the game with three shots.
-Grabovski, Gunnarsson, Liles, Lupul and Schenn each lead the Maple Leafs with two.

16:53: Phaneuf coasts in on the left wing and rips a wrister from the left circle. It hits a body or two in front. Phaneu recovers the rebound behind the cage, circles around the net and whips a wrister to the cage from the right circle. It hops around before MacArthur is able to punch it over the right leg of a stretched out Johnson. A dirty goal. Phaneuf and Grabovski get assists. Maple Leafs 3-2.
13:54: Steckel is called for swatting a puck out of play with his glove. That's a delay of game. Letang, Neal, Sullivan, Malkin and Kunitz take the ice.
13:21: Malkin chops a loose puck on net from the left circle with a backhander. Gustavsson fights it off.
12:54: BIG chance here for the Penguins. letang is hooked up on the right wing by Philippe Dupuis. The Penguins will have a two-man advantage for 1:00. The Penguins call a time out to get organized. Malkin, Kunitz, Letang, Neal and Sullivan take the ice.
12:43: Malkin forces a terrible pass to Letang above the left circle. Letang loses the puck and the leafs are able t chip it down ice.
12:18: Letang booms a one-timer from above the left circle. Gustavsson makes the save. Kunitz is there for the rebound but can't punch it by Gustavsson.
12:10: Malkin cranks a slapper froma bove the right circle. It hits Gustavsson and deflects out of play.
12:01: Wowza. Letang taps a pass to Malkin above the right circle. Malkin unleashes a wicked one-timer which blows by Gustvasson on the glove side. Phaneuf and Kuntiz screened Gustavsson on the play. There was some sizzle on that shot. Letang and Neal each get assists. The Penguins will still have 1:07 of power play time with a one-man advantage. Jeffrey, Letestu, Cooke, Niskanen and Martin take the ice. Maple Leafs 3, Penguins 3.
10:54: The Philippe Dupuis minor is killed. The Penguins didn't do much but they had their second power-play unit out for most of that chance.
9:52: There's Phil Kessel. Komisarek keeps the puck in the offensive zone at the right point and swats it to Connolly on the right wing. Connolly immediately feeds it to Kessel who swats it under Johnson. Johnson had no chance. What an effort by Komisarek to keep it in the zone. Connolly and Komisarek get assists. Maple Leafs 4-3.
7:21: Asham pushes the puck into the offensive zone one-on-one against Komisarek, goes wide and gets around him. Before he can get a shot off, Liles slides down and blocks it.
6:03: Kunitz punches a slapper on net from the left point. Gustavsson fights it off. Pascal Dupuis takes a spill in front of the crease and tries to cash in on the rebound but no dice.

4:50: Neal flies in off the right wing and snaps off a wrister from the right circle. Gustavson stacks his bads and kicks it out. Neal falls over Gustavsson and kicks off his lid. Play is halted. Malkin and Sullivan mix it up with Phaneuf. Nothing really happens but Sullivan and Phaneuf each get roughing minors.
3:35: Letang cuts in off the left wing and whips a low wrister on net. Gustavsson kicks it out. Malkin get the rebound and wires a wrister on net from the left wing. Gustavsson eats it up.
3:07: Letan gpushes the puck up the right wing and leaves a drop pass for Martin at the right point. Martin pounds a slapper. Gustavsson kicks it out. There's a rebound but no one in a white jersey is there to clean it up.
1:24: Off a turnover by Orpik, Lupul has a chance in tight. Malkin flops down to block it.
1:13: Johnson is puled for an extra attacker
1:06: Neal snaps off a low wrister from the left circle. Gustavsson kicks it out.
0:56: Gunnarsson ices the puck while attempting a shot for the empty cage. Not a smart play.
0:48: Letang taps a pass to Sullivan in the left circle. Sullivan takes the pass, settles it and punches a slapper. Gustavsson eats it up despite having Kunitz jabbing away for the rebound.
0:14: Kuntiz collects a loose puck to the right of the cage and whips it through the crease.
0:06: Neal has a chance in tight but no dice.
0:00: End of game. Maple Leafs 4, Penguins 3.
POSTGAME

-That was a fairly entertaining if sloppy game. Both teams exchanged scoring chances. Both team's made mistakes.
-If the Penguins cut down on their mistakes tonight, they probably get a win. Most of the Maple Leafs' scoring chances came off mistake by the Penguins. Whether it was a turnover or a defensive zone breakdown, the Penguins had a few errors which led to goals for Toronto.
-Tell us what's wrong with this scenario. The' Penguins penalty kill gave up two goals while their power-play scored two. Huh?
-Brent Johnson was okay but hardly spectacular.
-Evgeni Malkin had a very up and down game. He had moments where he looked like the best player in the game and he has others where he looks like Alexei Yashin.
-Chris Kunitz continues to produce even without Crosby. He gets his points in an ugly way with efforts down low, but he sure gets them.
-The "new" Matt Cooke continues to be a refreshing sight. One of the biggest shames of his well-deserved reputation as a dirty player is that most folks don't realize how talented he is. He's a steady point producer who is tenacious defensively.
-With the team trailing late, it would have been nice to see Dustin Jeffrey get an elevated role.
-The Maple Leafs have a ton of nice, little players who are 20-goal, 50-point types. If they can stay healthy, they have some impressive depth.
-MacArthur is a Penguins killer. He has eight points in his past seven games against them.
-Gustavsson was good, especially late. He gave up a few iffy rebounds but he turned away several quality chances, particularly in the latter stages of the third period.
-The Penguins had a 37-29 lead in shots.
-Kunitz and Malkin each led the game with five shots.
-Mike Brown, Philippe Dupuis, Mikhail Grabovski and John-Michael Liles each led the Maple Leafs with three.
-Dion Phaneuf lead the game with 27:23.
-Letang led the Penguins with 25:56.
-The Maple Leafs had a 30-26 lead in faceoffs (54 percent).
-David Steckel was 13-for-18 (68 percent).
-Park was 6 for 12 (50 percent).
-Mike Komisarek led the game with six blocked shots.
-Kris Letang led the Penguins with three.
-Cooke scored his 99th career point with the Penguins.
-Johnson appeared his 50th career game with the Penguins.
