For whatever reason, the Penguins just can't win in San Jose. Granted, they only play in the Silicon Valley every other season (more or less), but the fact they haven't won there since a 5-2 victory, Oct. 22, 1997 - the first month of Kevin Constantine's tenure as head coach - is staggering.

The Penguins did have some rotten teams in the middle part of the 2000s but still, despite having the talents of Ron Francis, Jaromir Jagr, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin available to them, the Penguins have gone 0-9-1 in HP Pavilion since 1997.

Here's a look at all of the Penguins' losses in San Jose during this streak:

Date: January 15, 1999

What Happened: The Penguins a 2-1 lead with less than then 14 minutes left off goals by captain Jaromir Jagr (right) in the first period and right winger Alex Kovalev in the third period. A goal by left winger Dave Lowry at 12:51 tied the game. Sharks captain Owen Nolan put the Sharks up for good with 2:13 remaining. The game was the Sharks first home win against the Penguins in franchise history.
Penguins goaltender: Tom Barrasso, 20 saves.
Sharks goaltender: Steve Shields, 17 saves.

What Happened: The Penguins lone non-loss in this winless streak snapped a three-game losing streak during that season. Center Vincent Damphousse gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead 7:37 into the first period. A power-play goal by center Robert Lang (right) at the 4:52 mark of the second period tied the game. Jagr recorded an assist and extended a scoring streak to eight games.

Sharks goaltender: Shields, 27 saves.
Also in the News That Day: Linebacker Brandon Short recorded 12 tackles and helped Penn State defeat Illinois, 27-7.

What Happened: A power-play goal by defenseman Roman Simicek gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead 9:07 into the game. The Sharks took a 2-1 lead off second period goals by left winger Alex Korolyuk and center Patrick Marleau. A power-play goal by Kovalev at 17:35 of the second tied the game 2-2. Left winger Jeff Friesen scored with 42 seconds left to take the lead for good.

What Happened: Nabokov tied Shields' franchise record with his 10th career shutout. San Jose got goals from Damphousse, left winger Adam Graves, center Mike Ricci, right winger Teemu Selanne and left winger Scott Thornton. The Penguins were shutout for the fifth time in a stretch of eight games.

Sharks goaltender: Nabokov, 38 saves.
Also in the News That Day: Attorneys for former Penguins coach Ivan Hlinka claimed the tead failed to salary payments on his contract following his firing Oct. 15. Hlinka was due $800,000 on a contract set to expire, June 30, 2003.

What Happened: Power-play goals in the first and second periods by captain Mario Lemieux (right) helped the Penguins claim a 2-1 lead early in the second. The Sharks responded with four unaswered goals by Marleau, Ricci, Nolan and Marleau again. Lemieux increased his league-leading point total to 53. In just 32 games against the Sharks to that point in his career, Lemieux had 49 points (17 goals, 32 assists).

Also in the News That Day: Avalanche captain Joe Sakic scored his 500th career goal in a 3-1 loss to the Canucks. Sakic was the 31st player in NHL history to reach that mark.

What Happened: The Sharks raced out to a 2-0 lead with goals by defenseman Brad Stuart in the first period and Marleau in the second. Left winger Konstantin Koltsov (right) got the Penguins on the scoreboard at 7:29 of the third period. A power play goal nearly three mintues later by defenseman Tom Preissing at 10:25 secured the win. Korolyuk added an insurance goal. Center Milan Kraft scored the game's final goal. Ricci appeared in his 1,000th career game.

Sharks goaltender: Nabokov, 31 saves.
Also in the News That Day: The Capitals traded former Penguins center Robert Lang to the Red Wings in exchange for left winger Tomas Fleischman. At the time, Lang led the league in scoring with 74 points.

What Happened: After defenseman Kyle McLaren gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead with a goal just 1:00 into the contest, right winger Michel Ouellet tied the game, 1-1 at 7:20 of the first period. San Jose reclaimed the lead, 2-1, when defenseman Matt Carle scored just over two minutes later at 9:44. After a scoreless second period, left winger Mike Grier scored the eventual game-winner 33 seconds into the third period. Just over a minute later at 1:45, center Dominic Moore score the game's final goal. Rookie center Evgeni Malkin (right) had his six-game goal-scoring streak snapped. Malkin had set a record for most consecutive games with a goal to begin his career.

Sharks goaltender: Vesa Toskala, 25 saves.

What Happened: A first period shorthanded goal by Joe Pavelski gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead. Grier scored the eventual game-winner 12:52 into the third. Left winger Ruslan Fedotenko scored the Penguins' only goal at 14:27 of the third off assists from Crosby and Malkin. The Penguins could only manage 11 shots on net.

What Happened: What Happened: The Penguins would race out to a 2-0 lead off early first period goals by defenseman Deryk Engelland (right) and Malkin. Marleau's goal early in the second was responded to by another goal by Malkin mid-way through the period. Late goals by left wingers Ryane Clowe and McGinn force overtime. In the shootout, Clowe scored the only goal.
