19:48: Right off the hop, Neal gets a puck in the slot off a turnover by the Sharks and snaps off a heavy wrister. Niemi fights it off but loses his stick in the process.
19:36: Deryk Enngalnd scores. Okay. Malkin just blindly taps the puck from the left wing to the right half wall. Engelland move sup and just chucks it a the cage. Niemi just biffs on the save and allows it to trickle through his gear and into the cage. A brutal goal to allow. You have to wonder if Niemi losing his stick threw him off there. Malkin and Sullivan get assists. Penguins 1-0.
19:00: Letang tosses a wrister at the cage from the right point. Niemi gloves it.
18:11: Niskanen controls the puck in the right wing corner of the Penguins' zone and plays it up ice. Andrew Desjardins flies in on the forecheck and knees on the inside of his right knee. Niskanen goes down in a heap. As play moves up ice, Niskanen hobbles to the bench and retreats to the locker room. Not good.
17:56: Lose a defenseman. Get a goal. Okay. Malkin chucks a shot on net from the right circle. Neal crashes in while fighting off Burns. The puck hits off the right skate of Niemi and deflects into the cage. Sharks coach Todd McLellan calls a timeout to get his team organized. Niemi is pulled for Thomas Greiss. The Penguins come out blazing. Sullivan and Neal get assists. Neal now ha 150 career points. Penguins 2-0.
17:41: Malkin rushes up ice and flicks a backhander from the right circle over the age.
14:38: Joe Pavelski attempts a spinning wrister from the right circle but can't get the shot on net.
13:21: Jamie McGinn pushes the puck into the offensive zone and veers off to the left wing where he loses the puck after Ben Lovejoy forces him with a nice stick on puck. Speaking of stick on puck....
11:57: Neal cracks a one-timer from above the left circle. Greiss fights it off.
10:12: After Richard Park and Pascal Dupuis force a turnover in the right wing corner, Chris Kuntiz from the right circle. He grips and rips a wrister. Greiss fights it off. There a rebound but officials blow play dead after losing track of the puck.
9:18: Malkin circles around the net and emerges to the right of the cage. He chops a backhander. It bounces around before Greiss smothers it. A small scrum develops.
8:53: Douglas Murray chucks a wrister on net from the right point. Fleury fends it off.
8:47: In transition, Malkin leads a two-on-two rush with... Engelland? Again? Okay. He deals to Engelland who streaks in off the right wing. Engelland rips a low wrister. Greiss knocks it dead and covers.
8:35: Niskanen returns to the ice according to broadcaster Paul Steigerwald.
6:30: Dupuis drives a slapper on net. Greiss eats it up.

5:06: Justin Braun snaps off a shot from the right wing. Fleury traps it against his chest and freezes play.
3:32: Mark Letestu snaps off a wrister from teh left circle. It gets blocked.
3:11: Off a turnover by the Penguins in their own zone, Ryane Clowe puts a wrister on net from a bad angle on the left wing. Fleury denies it.

1:32: Neal controls the puck in the left circle, turns and chucks it on net low. Greiss knocks it dead and covers.
1:29: Craig Adams and Brad Winchester square off. It's a pretty decisive mismatch in favored of Wincehster. The size each other up and engage. Winchester's long reach (6-foot-5, 230 pounds) gives him a pretty obvious advantage against Adams (6-foot-0, 200 pounds). He holds Adams off with his left and lands approximately three rights. Adams trips and falls backwards with Winchester on top. Both players head to the locker room with the period almost over.
0:00: End of period. Penguins 2, Sharks 0.
FIRST INTERMISSION

-That was probably the best period the Penguins have played this season. They were all over the Sharks. They won the majority of physical battles. Got to most loose pucks first and were much more aggressive.
-Malkin, Neal and Sullivan are just clicking.
-Deryk Engelland had arguably the best period of his career. On top of that, he looks harsh with that scar:

-Antti Niemi looked like he forgot there was a game tonight and accidently went out to dinner only to get a text message like a half hour before the game wondering where he was.
-If that make sense.
-The Penguisn dominated shots, 15-4.
-Engelland, Dupuis, Neal, Letang and Malkin each lead the game with two shots.

17:23: This is a game agina. Patrick Mareleau takes a little pass in the neutral zone and cuts through Letang and Arron Asham. He flicks a little wrister which squeaks through Fleury's gear and trickles into the net. A bad goal for the Penguisn to allow as a team. Martin Havlat and Jim Vandermeer get assists. A version of the "Hey Song" plays. Penguins 2-1.
16:13: Off a two-on-one, Couture has a chance in the left circle but fans on the shot. Lovejoy hits him after the shot attempt and they crash int the left wing boards. Lovejoy appear to be injured and returns to the bench.

10:23: Sullivan leads a rush up the left wing and deals a centering pass to Letang in the slot. Letang one touches it to Malkin in the left circle. Malkin jabs a little shot on net. It hits Neal in front. Malkin follows up on the puck and basically kicks it int. Except he didn't use a "distinct kicking motion." Officials review the play and confirm the goal. The Penguins are getting some good bounces tonight. Letang and Sullivan get assists. Sullivan has a three assist night. A scoring change awards the assists to Neal and Letang. Penguins 3-1.

2:16: Sullivan chase after a puck behind the net. Burns is there. Sullivan taps him on the back. Burns flops into the boards. Unless Burns (6-foot-5, 230 pounds) is just a terrible diver, that was an amazing display of strength by Sullivan (5-foot-8, 161 pounds).

15:25: Thornton tries to jam in a wraparound on his forehand from the right of the cage. The puck hops up to Havlat in the left circle. Fleury slides to his right and denies the shot. An impressed Errey calls Fleury "cat-like." Not available for comment:

POSTGAME

-The next time someone tells you fighting has no purpose in hockey, you point them to the video of this game. The Sharks were struggling in the first period. They goaded the Penguisn into two fights - one late in the first period and another early in the second. They fed off the energy from those fights and created a little momentum. Eventually, they got a few pucks into the net and came away with a win.
-The Penguins defense was not sharp. In all fairness, there were some injuries with Matt Niskanen leaving for a few shifts and Ben Lovejoy for the bulk of the game so a lot of minutes had to be spread around. But the Sharks basically did what the Penguins do to opponents and battlered the Penguins down low with physical play along the board and created scoring chances off a strong forecheck. The Penguins beleagured blue line couldn't keep up.
-Marc-Andre Fleury didn't have his best game, but it would be irresponsible to put too much of this loss on his shoulders.
-The Penguins' third line of Arron Asham, Mark Letestu and Matt Cooke was rather invisible.
-The bright spot for the Penguins was the James Neal, Evgeni Malkin, Steve Sullivan line. Regardless of when Jordan Staal and Sidney Crosby return, this line needs to stick together. They have chemistry.
-Sullivan had his best game of the season. He was a force offensively and even creates a few things just with his skating on the forecheck.
-A power play could have helped the Penguins.
-It was an interesting choice to used Dupuis in the shootout. Hard to imagine why Neal doesn't get the call there.
-The Sharks' grinders like Jamie McGinn, Ryan Clowe and Michal Handzus had a field day down low in the Penguins' zone.
-It's amazing what a goaltending switch can do sometimes. Antti Niemi just didn't look ready for the game. Greiss came in and gave his team stability.
-The Sharks have some impressive depth on their blue line. Brent Burns and Dan Boyle might be the best pair of skating defenseman on one team in the NHL. Douglas Murray has some surprising wheels for a man his size. Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Justin Braun were confident with the puck.
-The Sharks had a 37-36 edge in shots.
-Neal led the game with eight.
-Clowe and Martin Havlat led the Sharks with six each.
-Letang led the game with a monster 33:56 of ice time.
-Douglas Murray led the Sharks with 23:42.
-The Sharks dominated faceoffs, 39-25 (61 percent).
-Patrick Marleau was 10 for 14 (71 percent).
-Mark Letestu was 8 for 14 (57 percent).
-Douglas Murray led the game with five blocked shots.
-Paul Martin led the Penguins with four.
-Neal recorded his 150th career point.
-Malkin had his first game with three or more points since a 6-1 win against the Coyotes, Dec. 20, 2010. He had five points in that game.
-The Penguins extended a winless streak in San Jose to 10 games. Oof.
