-Happy 48th birthday to former Penguins coach Michel Therrien. Promoted from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Dec. 15, 2005 as a replacement for Ed Olczyk, Therrien coached the Penguins for parts of four seasons. He finished the 2005-06 season with a 14-29-8 record. In 2006-07, he directed the club to a 47-24-11 record. The team improved by 47-points, the fourth-best turnaround in NHL history. The Penguins also qualified for the postseason for the first time in six years. He followed that up by leading the team to a 47-27-8 record and the Atlantic Division title, the first division crown for the club in 10 years. The team would advance to the Stanley Cup final for the first time in 16 years. After 57 games and a 27-25-5 record in 2008-09, Therrien was fired Feb. 15 and replaced by Dan Bylsma. In 272 games with the Penguins, Therrien had a 135-105-32 record. His 135 wins are third-most in franchise history.

Prior to the 2002-03 season, the Capitals claimed Berry off waivers.
-Happy 40th birthday to former Penguins defenseman Roman Simicek. A ninth-round pick in 2000, Simicek's Penguins career amounted to 29 games and nine points with the 2000-01 Penguins. Midway through the season, Simicek was traded to the Wild in exchange for Steve McKenna. He currently plays for GKS Tychy in Poland.
-Shootout goals by Zach Parise and Patrik Elias gave the Devils a 4-3 win against the rival Flyers. Adam Henrique netted a goal and an assist in regulation for New Jersey while teammate Ilya Kovalchuk recorded two assists. Former Penguin Johan Hedberg made 20 saves in the victory. -With Kaleta suspended and forwards Jochen Hecht (concussion) and Tyler Ennis (ankle) dinged up, the Sabres recalled forward Corey Tropp from Rochester of the AHL.
-"At the end of the day, the reality of the matter is, Daniel Alfredsson is not in the lineup. So talk about reputation, talk about whatever you want to talk about, we don’t have our captain in the lineup. That’s killing us. Obviously, there was no retribution, no even up call, whatever you want to call it. That’s a tough pill for us to swallow. We’re not happy in the dressing room. We’re not happy with the league and the Rangers or anyone else, or Wolski. That’s the reality of the matter. You can sugar coat it all you want and say the right things, but we’re not a happy bunch.” - Senators forward Zenon Konopka complaining about a hit Tuesdayby Rangers forward Wojtek Wolski which caused Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson to suffer a concussion. -Funny Faces of the Night: Phoenix's Taylor Pyatt and Nashville's Jordin Tootoo:

-Rinne had a heck of a 29th birthday considering he recorded a shutout and signed a seven-year contract extension worth a total of $49 million. He will have a salary cap hit of $7 million, the highest in the league among all goaltenders.
-EN Says: This is a good move for the Predators on many levels. It brings stability to arguably the most important position and it shows fans there is a commitment to keep the team as a winner. That said, Rinne has one season of elite play on his resume. Give someoen $7 million for a lean track record is quite a bit.

-The Red Wings recalled defenseman Brendan Smith from Grand Rapids of the AHL.
-Defenseman Mike Commodore made his debut with the Red Wings last night.

Anyway, I disagree on your criticism of Pekka Rinne. I think the $7MM/yr contract works for many reason. You say one year of elite play, but he has 100 wins, .92 SV%, 2.33 GAA and 23 shutouts in 3+ seasons. Also, Nashville doesn't have any money tied up in long-term contracts. Only two players (Erat and Legwand) are signed beyond the end of next season. I think it's the right move for the Predators.
