The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 3-2 win against the North Stars, Nov. 9, 1991.
After a scoreless second period, center Bobby Smith gave the North Stars a 2-0 lead with a score against goaltender Wendell Young at 7:30 of the third period. Right winger Ulf Dahlen had the lone assist.
Less than three minutes later, center Mario Lemieux got the Penguins on the scoreboard for the first time and made it 2-1 with a goal against goaltender Jon Casey. Assists went to left winger Kevin Stevens and right winger Jaromir Jagr.
Stevens tied the game with a power-play goal at 15:24 on a snaps shot from the left circle. Right wingers Joe Mullen and Mark Recchi netted assists.
Center Jiri Hrdina scored the game-winning goal on a backhander from the right circle at 17:21 off assists from defenseman Paul Coffey and Recchi.
Notes:
-Young made 13 saves in the victory.
-The three stars were 1.) Hrdina 2.) Casey 3.) Modano.
-Young replaced Pietrangelo at 4:40 of the second period due to an injury suffered when Broten crashed into the net.
-Left winger Phil Bourque left the game at 2:30 of the second period when he suffered a "slight concussion" when he crashed into the boards head first.
