The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 5-4 overtime win against the Oilers, Nov. 13, 1991.
Stevens increased the lead to 2-0 with his 10th goal of the season off another backhander at 8:13 of the first period. Center Mario Lemieux and defenseman Larry Murphy netted assists.
The Oilers got on the scoreboard late in the period when rookie center Josef Beranek scored against goaltender Tom Barrasso with a slapper from the right point off assists from left winger Vincent Damphousse and defenseman David Shaw.
Lemieux restored the Penguins' two goal lead just 1:30 into the second period and made it 3-1. Stevens and Jagr collected assists.
Former Penguins left winger Craig Simpson scored on a slapper from the right circle at the 5:51 mark to make it 3-2. Right winger Joe Murphy recorded the only assist.
Jagr deflected a shot by Larry Murphy at 17:57 put the Penguins up 4-2. Murphy and defenseman Gordie Roberts were credited with assists.
Shaw scored his first goal of the season with a slapper late in regulation at 18:09 of the third period to make it 4-3. Joe Murphy and left winger Esa Tikkanen collected assists.
Less than a minute later at 18:54, Joe Murphy tied the game, 4-4. Right winger Scott Mellanby had the only assist.
