"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 6-2 loss to the Capitals, Nov. 15, 1991.
The Penguins tied the game, 1-1, when center Ron Francis scored his first goal of the season shorthanded against goaltender Don Beaupre. Defenseman Paul Coffey and Barrasso were credited with assists.
Less than a minute later on the same power play, Ridley scored at 19:40 to regain the lead for Washington, 2-1. Iafrate and center Michal Pivonka had assists.
Left winger Dmitri Khristich scored the eventual game-winning goal at 5:13 of the second period off an assist from Pivonka.
Pivonka scored at 8:31 of the period to give Washington a 4-1 lead. Right winger Dino Ciccarelli and Ridley recorded assists.
Less than two minutes later, a goal by left winger Todd Krygier put the Capitals up 5-1. Assists were credited to Pivonka and Miller.
At 13:27, left winger Kevin Stevens scored the Penguins' second goal off assists from right winger Jaromir Jagr and Coffey.
Krygier scored the game's final goal at 19:13 off assists from Iafrate and Miller.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 12 saves in the loss.
-The three stars were 1.) Ridley, 2.) Pivonka 3.) Iafrate.
-Goaltender Wendell Young made 15 saves after replacing Barrasso at the start of the third period.
-Francis scored his first goal of the since the team's Stanley Cup-clinching 8-0 win against the North Stars, May 25, 1991.
-The Capitals won their fourth consecutive game.
