Penguins

-Happy 57th birthday to former Penguins defenseman Tom Edur (right). Acquired midway through the 1977-78 season in a deal which sent Dennis Owchar to the Colorado Rockies, Edur's Penguins career amounted to a pretty productive 58 games and 43 points during that campaign. In the 1978 offseason, he retired at the age of 23 to devote himself to religion having become a Jehovah's Witness.

-Happy 30th birthday to former Penguins forward Chris Minard. A free agent signing in the 2007 offseason, Minard spent parts of two seasons with the Penguins. As a rookie in 2007-08, Mindard saw action in 15 games and scored two points. He followed that up in 2008-09 by playing in 20 games and recording three points. In the 2009 offseason, Minard joined the Oilers as a free agent. He is currently a member of the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings' AHL affiliate.

Atlantic Division

-Rick DiPietro made 24 saves for the Islanders in a 4-3 defeat of the Canadiens. Matt Martin recorded two assists for New York. Montreal got two assists from Tomas Plekanec.

-Islanders starting goaltender Evgeni Nabokov left the game in the first period due to a groin injury:

-Flyers forward and former Penguins captain Jaromir Jagr left the game due to a suspected groin injury.

-Philadelphia defenseman Erik Gustafsson will be sidelined six weeks following wrist surgery.

-Rangers defenseman Marc Staal (concussion) was given medical clearance for light physical activity.

-The Devils demoted forward Vladimir Zharkov to Albany of the AHL.

Northeast Division

-A goal and an assist by Milan Michalek led the Senators to a 5-2 win against the Oilers. Jason Spezza recorded two assists for Ottawa while Craig Anderson made 22 saves in the victory.

-Shootout goals by Rich Peverly and David Krejci gave the Bruins a 2-1 win against the Blue Jackets. Tuukka Rask made 21 saves in the victory.

-Authorities in Montreal finally decided not to puruse charges against Bruins captain Zdeno Chara over his hit against Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty last season:

-Canadiens defenseman and former Penguin Hal Gill was hospitalized due to an undisclosed illness.

-Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers will not be disciplined for this hit against Dainius Zubrus Wednesday:

-With defenseman Mike Weber dealing with an "upper-body" injury, the Sabres recalled defenseman T.J. Brennan from Rochester of the AHL.

-"I am standing behind the university. Our concern and compassion should be for the children involved in these terrible allegations. Whomever may have been involved in any way, anyone who knew anything, they've got to come clean. This is not about covering your ass. Telling the truth now will go a long way toward getting everyone through this." - Sabres owner Terry Pegula on his alma mater, Penn State. Pegula donated $88 to the school in order to help start Division I hockey programs.

-Maple Leafs forward Matthew Lombardi and defenseman Mike Komisarek suffered "upper-body" injuries last night.

Southeast Division

-Two goals by Evander Kane led the Jets to a 4-1 win against the Capitals. Kyle Wellwood added a goal and an assist for Winnipeg while Ondrej Pavelec made 31 saves in the victory.

-Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman connects the dots and accuses Versus of having a pro-Flyers bias.

Central Division

-Martin Erat scored two goals for the Predators in a 4-1 win against the Maple Leafs. Sergei Kostitsyn recorded three assists for Nashville while teammate Ryan Suter added a goal and an assist. Pekka Rinne made 38 saves in the victory.

-Move over Patrik Stefan. We have another patron anti-saint of Empty Netters. Nashville's Craig Smith:

-Niklas Backstrom made 27 saves for the Wild in a 1-0 shutout of the Avalanche. It was Backstrom 24th career shutout. Minnesota has won three consecutive games.

-Defensive Play of the Night: Colorado's Jan Hejda going stick on puck against Minnesota's Nick Schultz:

-The Flames loaned forward Mitch Wahl to the Hamilton Bulldogs, the Canadiens' AHL affiliate.

-The Canucks demoted goaltender Eddie Lack to Chicago of the AHL.

Pacific Division

-Two goals by Mike Richards helped the Kings beat the rival Ducks, 5-2. Teammates Simon Gagne, Anze Kopitar and Slava Voynov each collected a goal and an assist while Jonathan Quick made 35 saves in the victory. Andrew Cogliano scored two goals for Anaheim.

-Goal of the Night: Los Angeles' Simon Gagne on a shorthanded breakaway:

-Marc-Edouard Vlasic had a goal and three assists for the Sharks who beat the Red Wings, 5-2. Captain Joe Thornton and Brad Winchester each collected a goal and an assist for San Jose while Antti Niemi made 40 saves in the victory.

The announcers during the Flyers game actually said that Lemieux didn't make it to the playoffs until Jagr showed up in Pittsburgh.

That was funny. But Stefan's miss was followed by a game-tying goal, wasn't it? I'd save he deserves to keep his place at the altar.
