"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 7-3 win against the Nordiques, Nov. 18, 1991.
Recchi made it 2-0 at 11:48 of the first period with a goal off an assist from left winger Troy Loney.
At 2:25 of the second period, left winger Kevin Stevens scored from the left circle off assists from Recchi and center Ron Francis.
Just under seven minutes later at 9:21, the Nordiques got on the scoreboard with a goal by center Mats Sundin off a rebound against goaltender Tom Barrasso. Assists went to center Joe Sakic and left winger Doug Smail.
At 17:13, Recchi completed the hat trick and scored the eventual game-winning goal off assists from center Mario Lemieux and right winger Jaromir Jagr.
Just 1:47 into the third period, Stevens scored his second goal on a power play. Recchi and defenseman Paul Coffey netted assists on the tic-tac-toe play.
At the 3:03 mark, Stevens completed his own hat trick with a slapper from the right circle. Barrasso recorded the only assist.
Sundin scored his second goal while killing a penalty at 6:29 off assists from Smail and defenseman Alexei Gusarov.
Smail scored Quebec's final goal at 13:19. Defenseman Steven Finn and Sundin were credited with assists.
At 17:12, Jagr scored the game's final goal with a backhander. Recchi and left winger Bob Errey had assists.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 27 saves in the win.
-The three stars were 1.) Recchi 2.) Stevens 3.) Sundin.
-The Penguins recorded two hat tricks in the same game for the fourth time in franchise history.
-Recchi's hat trick was the first of his career.
-Stevens had his second hat trick in three games.
-Left winger Phil Bourque missed the game due to an elbow ailment.
