The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
PREGAME
-Dan Potash interviews Dan Bylsma. Potash's mustache looks like Don Ameche's:

-The Penguins' starters are Sidney Crosby, Chris Kunitz, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, Brooks Orpik and Marc-Andre Fleury.
-Their scratches are Steve MacIntyre and Richard Park.
-The Canadiens' starters are Michael Cammalleri, Brian Gionta, Tomas Plekanec, Josh Gorges, P.K. Subban and Carey Price.
-Their scratches are Scott Gomez and Frederic St.-Denis.
-Canadiens forward Andrei Kostitsyn is returning after missing 10 games due to a groin injury.
-Kostitsyn was the last Canadiens player to get a hat trick against the Penguins. He scored three goals in a 3-2 win Dec. 27, 2008.
-Kostitsyn is also one of two players with last names begining with "K" to record a hat trick in Canadiens history. The other was Saku Koivu who also got his against the Penguins in a 5-4 win, Nov. 18, 2002.
-It looks like Dan Bylsma has dusted off the Michel Therrien memorial bingo ball roller/line combination machine:

-These won't stay the same for most of the night, but Root Sports shows off the Penguins presumed lines and defensive pairings:

POSTGAME

-What a weird game to try and figure out. This contest had so many bizarre twists and turns. The start was bizarre with few quick goals. The Canadiens built up a lead with some fortunate hops. The Penguins had two goals turned over on officials calls. Then the Kris Letang injury and game-winner. What a weird night.
-The Max Pacioretty hit deserve a suspension. Period. Who cares if Letang came back? The head appeared to be a the prinicipal point of contact. It caused some damage. It was a dangerous play. Three games should be the mininum punishment.
-The fact that Pacioretty was the one who delivered the hit made this even more bizarre. Afterall, he was the one who was severly injured on a dangerous hit by Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara last season:
-Afterwards, Pacioretty expressed disappointment in the NHL for not disciplining Chara. He told TSN: "I am upset and disgusted that the league didn't think enough of (the hit) to suspend him. I'm not mad for myself, I'm mad because if other players see a hit like that and think it's okay, they won't be suspended, then other players will get hurt like I got hurt."
-Letang said Pacioretty apologized after the hit.
-Letang suffered a broken nose and had a pin put in. And still came back? Ouch.
-The hit:
-Letang speaks, partially in French:
-The officiating was suspect for each team tonight. The Penguins had to kill some bogas penalties tonight and the fact that the officials failed to blow play dead prior to Letang's goal was just bizarre.
-Price was outstanding tonight. He deserved a better fate.
-Fleury was a little shaky early on but settled things as the game wore on.
-Staal continues to take his game to another level. He was a physical presence all night and the scoring touch he displayed on his goal tonight was elite.
-The Penguins led in shots, 42-27.
-Letang, Evgeni Malkin and David Desharnais each led the game with six shots.
-Letang led the game with 24:38 of ice time.
-The Canadiens dominated faceoffs, 43-25 (63 percent).
-Lars Eller was 15 for 21 (71 percent).
-Jordan Staal was 12 for 25 (48 percent).
-Gorges led the game with five blocked shots.
-Zbynek Michalek led the Penguins with four.
-Malkin moved a head of Paul Coffey for 10th place on the franchise's all-time scoring list. Both players have 440 points but Malkin (166) has more goals than Coffey (105).
-Staal moved ahead of Randy Cunneyworth for 34th place. Both players have 216 points but Staal (107) has more goals than Cunneyworth (101).
-Dupuis moved ahead of John Chabot for 59th place. Both players have 134 points but Dupuis (55) has more goals than Chabot (34).
-Kunitz moved ahead of Mario Faubert for 71st place. Both players have 111 points but Kunitz (51) has more goals than Faubert (21).
