Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty was suspended today for three games for a hit to the face of Penguins defenseman in the third period of Saturday's 4-3 overtime win by the Penguins.
NHL senior vice president of player safety and hockey operations Brendan Shanahan issued the suspension after he held a disciplinary hearing with Pacioretty earlier today.
Despite suffering a broken nose on the play, Letang returned to the game in overtime and scored the game-winning goal.
Shanahan's explanation:
EN Says: This seems right. Given the fact that Pacioretty has no prior history with regards to discipline and that he trying to make a "hockey play" which just went wrong, Shanahan seems to have handled this perfectly.
Ultimately, the important thing with a suspsension is that the NHL teaches the offending player and the league as a whole was is a legal hit. Pacioretty apologized for the hit directly to Letang so he seems to have gotten the message, even before the hit.

Wow, i did not realize that his head rotated to the left so much...can't believe there was not a concussion. Tangy's a tough dude.
If it was Cooke, it would have been a 10 game suspension and a $25K fine.
