"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 9-3 win against the Flyers, Nov. 29, 1991.
Stevens scored again on a power play from the slot just over four minutes later at 8:50 of the first period to make it a 2-0 game. Coffey recorded the only assist.
Stevens completed his at trick at 15:24 on another rebound off assists from center Mario Lemieux and defenseman Larry Murphy.
At 14:06 of the second period, Jagr scored against rookie goaltender Dominic Roussel with a backhander off an assist from Murphy to give the Penguins a 4-0 lead.
Stevens scored his fourth goal of the game and 20th goal of the season at 15:21. The goal was unassisted.
The Penguins made it 6-0 when Lemieux scored on a slap shot less than a minute later at 15:48. Jagr had the only assist.
Former Penguins center Dan Quinn scored the Flyers' first goal just 1:34 into the third period on a power play against goaltender Tom Barrasso. Assists went to left winger Kevin Dineen and center Rod Brind'Amour.
Just over 10 minutes later, Brind'Amour scored another power play to make it 6-2. Quinn had the lone assist.
Less than half a minute later, Brind'Amour scored another power-play goal. Assists went to Quinn and Dineen.
Lemieux scored again with a backhander off a rebound at 12:59 to make it 7-3. Assists wen to Jagr and Stevens.
Right winger Joe Mullen cashed on a backhander in 14:36 to make it 8-3. Left winger Bob Errey and defenseman Jim Paek were credited with assists.
The game's final goal was scored by right winger Mark Recchi at 19:19. Assist went to right winger Jamie Leach and left winger Phil Bourque.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 29 saves in the win.
-The three stars were 1.) Stevens 2.) Lemieux 3.) Jagr.
-Stevens' scores gave him the NHL lead in goals and points.
