The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 5-1 win against the Flyers, Nov. 30, 1991.
Less than three minutes later at 8:13 of the first period, right winger Joe Mullen scored off assists from centers Ken Priestlay and Ron Francis.
At 11:47, the Flyers got on the scoreboard when defenseman Kerry Huffman scored his first goal of the season on a power play against goaltender Tom Barrasso. Assists went to defenseman Gord Murphy and center Mike Ricci.
Francis scored to make it a 3-1 game at the 17:36 mark. Right winger Mark Recchi recorded the only assist.
After a scoreless second period, defenseman Gordie Roberts scored at 7:29 to make it 4-1. Jagr and Recchi had assists.
The game's final goal came from Recchi on a power play off assists from Lemieux and Stevens.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 33 saves in the win.
-The three stars were 1.) Barrasso 2.) Francis 3.) Lemieux.
-The Penguins set a new franchise record for longest unbeaten streak against the Flyers at seven games (5-0-2).
