Penguins

-Happy 78th birthday to former Penguins and Pittsburgh Hornets forward Val Fonteyne (right). Claimed in the 1967 expansion draft from the Red Wings, Fonteyne, the first No. 8 in franchise history, spent parts of five seasons with the Penguins. A member of the franchise's innagural team in 1967-68, Fonteyne played in 69 games and scored 34 points. In 1968-69, Fonteyne saw action in 76 games and accumulated 29 points. He followed that up in 1969-70 by appearing in 68 games, scoring 26 points and helping the franchise reach the postseason for the first time. He appeared in all 10 of the team's playoff games that spring and recorded two assists. The 1970-71 season saw Fonteyne play in 70 games and record 13 points. Fonteyne's final season in Pittsburgh was 1971-72. He saw action in 68 games and accumulated 19 points. In the 1972 postseason, he played in four games and failed to record a point. During the offseason, he joined the Alberta Oilers of the WHA as a free agent. In 349 regular season games with the Penguins, Fonteyne, primarily renown for his penalty killing abilities, scored 121 points, 66th-most in franchise history, and accumulated only four penalty minutes.

-Happy 57th birthday to former Penguins defenseman Mario Faubert (right). A fourth-round pick in 1974, Faubert spent parts of seven seasons with the Penguins. As a rookie in 1974-75, Faubert appeared in 10 games and scored one goal. He followed that up in 1975-76 by playing in 21 games and scored nine points. Faubert saw an increase in action in 1976-77 by appearing in 77 contests and scored 13 points. He played in three postseason games that spring and scored one goal. He was limited to 18 games and six assists in 1977-78. After spending all of 1978-79 with Binghamton of the AHL, Faubert rebounded in 1979-80 by playing in 49 games and scoring 18 points. He appeared in two postseason games that spring and recorded one assist. His finest NHL season was 1981-82. He set career highs in games (72), points (52) and penalty minutes (188). The 1981 postseason saw him appear in five games and score two points. Faubert's final NHL season was 1981-82. He was limited to 14 games and 12 points after suffering a career-ending leg injury against the Blues, Nov. 18, 1981. In 231 regular season games with the Penguins, Faubert score 111 points, 72nd-most in franchise history. In 10 postseason games, he scored four points.

-Happy 45th birthday to former Penguins forward Kelly Buchberger. A free agent signing in the 2003 offseason, Buchberger's Penguins career amounted to 71 points, four points and 109 penalty minutes in 2003-04. Following the season, he retired. Buchberger is currently an assistant coach with the Oilers.

-Happy 48th birthday to former Penguins forward Rich Sutter. A first-round pick in 1982, Sutter spent parts of two seasons with the Penguins. As a rookie in 1982-83, he appeared in four games and failed to record a point. After five games and no points in 1983-84, Sutter was traded to Flyers along with two draft pick in exchange for Andy Brickley, Mark Taylor, Ron Flockhart and two draft picks. In nine games with the Penguins, Sutter, a member of the famed Sutter family, failed to record a point.

Atlantic Division

-A goal and an assist by Marian Gaborik helped the Rangers beat the Hurricanes, 5-3. Martin Biron made 28 saves for New York.

-Hit of the Night: New York's Brian Boyle on Carolina's Jeff Skinner:

-New York's Michael Del Zotto and Carolina's Chad LaRose each kept an eye on this puck:

-Rangers defenseman Marc Staal (concussion) resumed skating.

-The Islanders recalled defenseman and Upper St. Clair native Dylan Reese from Bridgeport of the AHL.

-In addition to his ailing knee, Flyers captain Chris Pronger is still deaing with a virus.

-The Flyers recalled defenseman Matt Walker from Adirondack of the AHL.

Northeast Division

-The Bruins signed forward David Krejci (right) to a three-year contract extension worth a total of $15.75 million. He will have a salary cap hit of $5.25 million. He is in the final year of a contract with salary cap hit of $3.75 million.

-Boston demoted forward Jordan Caron and defenseman Steven Kampfer to Providence of the AHL.

-Senators defenseman Filip Kuba is day to day due to an "upper-body" injury.

-Ottawa defenseman Matt Carkner was demoted to Binghamton of the AHL for a conditioning assignment.

-With Canadiens rookie forward Louis Leblanc making his NHL debut across the continent in Anaheim Wednesday, Canadiens forward Erik Cole paid for Leblanc's parents to fly across the continent to see their son.

-Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty had rougly 35 members of his extended family in the San Francisco area attend the game even though he was suspended for his hit on Kris Letang Saturday.

Southeast Division

-Ondrej Pavelec made 33 saves for the Jets in a 1-0 shutout of the old... uh... Jets... the Coyotes. It was his eighth career shutout.

-Pavelec kicked out this puck:

-Keith Yandle and the Coyotes aren't very popular in Winnipeg:

-Jets fans booed Coyotes captain Shane Doan, the only player on Phoenix's roster who played for the original Jets, every time he touched the puck.

-The Hurricanes hired former Devils head coach John MacLean as an assistant coach.

-With forward Kris Versteeg dealing with a broken nose, The Panthers recalled forward Bracken Kearns from San Antonio of the AHL.

Central Division

-A shootout goal by captain Rick Nash gave the Blue Jackets a 4-3 win against the Flames. Nikita Nikitin had a regulation goal and two assists for Columbus while Curtis Sanford made 32 saves in the victory. Blake Comeau collected a goal and an assist for Calgary.

-Nash tied the game late in regulation with a deflection goal:

-A goal and two assists by Colin Wilson led the Predators to a wild 6-5 win against the Canucks. Mike Fisher scored two goals for Nashville while Craig Smith recorded three assists. Anders Lindback made 19 saves in the victory. Daniel Sedin collected a goal and an assist for Vancouver.

Northwest Division

-Red tape has delayed the return of Canucks forward Mason Raymond to the lineup. He has been sidelined since suffering a broken vertabrae in Game 6 of last season's Stanley Cup final.

-The Flames recalled defenseman Joe Piskula from Abbotsford of the AHL and demoted forward Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond to Abbotsford.

-The Wild recalled defenseman Cody Almond from Houston of the AHL.

Pacific Division

-A goal and an assist by Radek Dvorak helped the Stars beat the Senators, 3-2. Andrew Raycroft made 33 saves in the victory.

-Ottawa's Milan Michalek and Dallas' Jamie Benn each kept their eyes on this puck:

-Jonathan Quick made 41 saves for the Kings who beat the Panthers, 2-1. Los Angeles has beaten Florida seven consecutive times.

-Kings defenseman Willie Mitchell ("lower body") and forward Mike Richards ("upper body") each left the game due to injuries.

-Kings defenseman and former Penguin Rob Scuderi fended off Florida's Mark Cullen:

-Shootout goals by Martin Havlat, Michal Handzus and Joe Pavelski gave the Sharks a 4-3 win against the Canadiens. Ryane Clowe and Logan Couture each had a regulation goal and assist for San Jose while Antti Niemi made 29 saves in the victory. David Desharnais collected a regulation goal and two assists for Montreal.

-Former Devils/Panthers/Thrashers/Predators forward Niclas Bergfors has joined Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL.

-Former Blues Jackets/Coyotes/Avalanche forward Joakim Lindström has joined Skellefteå of the Elitserien in Sweden.

-The IIHF will induct Raimo Helminen, Pavel Bure, Phil Housley, Milan Novy, and Andy Murray into its Hall of Fame for 2012.
