"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.

Today, we look at the Penguins' 8-0 win against the Sharks, Dec. 5, 1991.

The Penguins faced the San Jose Sharks for the first time in Franchise History at the Cow Palace in Daly, City, Calif. The Penguins took a 1-0 lead 11:53 into the game when center Mario Lemieux scored with a backhander on a power play against goaltender Jeff Hackett. Center Ron Francis had the only assist.

At 6:41 of the second period, defenseman Paul Coffey made it 2-0 with a one-timer on a power play against goaltender Arturs Irbe. Assists went to Lemieux and right winger Mark Recchi.

The Penguins made it 3-0 when Recchi scored at 8:25 off assists from defenseman Gordie Roberts and Francis.

Another power-play goal at 9:56 by left winger Kevin Stevens gave the Penguins a 4-0 lead with a re-direction off a shot by Lemieux. Assists went to Lemieux and Coffey.

Lemieux made it 5-0 with yet another power player-play goal at 11:43 off assists from Coffey and Recchi.

At 14:47, Stevens scored his second goal against goaltender Brian Hayward to give the Penguins a 6-0 lead. Lemieux had the only assist

Left winger Troy Loney got in on the act and scored the Penguins' seventh goal at 16:24. Recchi and left winger Bob Errey netted assists.

At 17:10 of the third period, Stevens completed his hat trick on another power play. Lemieux and Coffey were credited with assists.

Notes:

-Tom Barrasso made 36 saves in the shutout.

-Stevens' hat trick was his fourth of the season.

-Barrasso recorded his first regular season shutout since Dec. 28, 1990.

-It was the Penguins' first regular season road shutout since Gilles Meloche and Roberto Romano combined to make 30 saves against the Canucks, Jan. 23, 1987.

-The Penguins set a franchise record largest margain of victory in a regular season road game.
