The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 6-1 loss to the Blues, Dec. 7, 1991.
St. Louis increased the lead to 2-0 at 6:20 when left winger Brendan Shanahan scored on a power play off assists from right winger Brett Hull and defenseman Paul Cavallini.
Just under a minute later at 7:17, center Nelson Emerson scored on a backhander to make it a 3-0 game. Defenseman Jeff Brown and Christian had assists.
At 14:37, Cavallini scored with a deflected shot from the left point to give the Blues a 4-0 lead. Sutter had the only assist.
Sutter scored his second goal of the game at the 16:42 mark on a power play off assists from Emerson and center Adam Oates.
Right winger Mark Recchi scored the Penguins' only goal at 10:10 of the second period on a power play against goaltender Curtis Joseph. Assists went to defenseman Paul Coffey and center Ron Francis.
Left winger Dave Lowry capped the scoring at 14:30 with a goal against goaltender Wendell Young off assists from Shanahan and Cavallini.
