Penguins

-Sidney Crosby (above) will miss the next two games as a precaution due to an apparent head ailment.

-"There's no 'if' in life when you choose." - Flyers forward Jaromir Jagr on his offseason.

-The Pensblog compares Jagr to Tyler Kennedy and Steve Sullivan.

-Flyers forward and former Penguin Maxime Talbot compared current teammate Claude Giroux to Crosby.

-Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik (532 games) needs one game to tie Ron Francis (533) for 10th-most games in franchise history (PG+).

-Scott Munroe made 25 saves for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 1-0 shutout of the Binghamton Senators. Matt Rust scored the game's only goal.

-Zack Torquato had a goal and an assist for the Wheeling Nailers in a 3-1 defeat of the Trenton Devils. Cody Chupp recorded two assists for Wheeling while teammate Patrick Killeen made 35 saves.

-Happy 40th birthday to former Penguins forward Petr Nedved (right). Acquired in the 1995 offseason along with Sergei Zubov in a deal which sent Luc Robitaille and Ulf Samuelsson to the Rangers, Nedved spent two seasons with the Penguins. In 1995-96, Nedved saw action in 80 games and scored 99 points, good enough only fourth place on the team. The 1996 postseason saw Nedved appear in 18 games and score 20 points, including one of the most memorable postseason goals in franchise's history, a game-winner in the fourth overtime of a 3-2 win against the Capitals in Game 4 of an Eastern Conference quarterfinal series (below). He followed that up in 1996-97 by playing in 74 games and scoring 71 points. He played in five postseason games that spring and scored three points. After missing all of 1997-98 and part of 1998-99 due to a contract dispute, Nedved was traded back to the Rangers along with Chris Tamer and Sean Pronger in exchange for Alex Kovalev and Harry York. In 154 regular season games for the Penguins, Nedved scored 170 points, 41st-most in franchise history. In 23 postseason games, Nedved scored 23 points. He is currently the captain of Bili Tygri Liberec of the Czech Extraliga in the Czech Republic.

-Happy 76th birthday to former Penguins defenseman Noel Price. Claimed from the Canadiens in the 1967 expansion draft, Price spent parts of two seasons in Pittsburgh. During the Penguins inaugural season of 1967-68, Price appeared in 70 games and scored 33 points. In 1968-69, Price saw action in 73 games and scored 20 points. During the 1969 offseason, the Kings claimed him in a reverse draft. In 143 regular seasons games for the Penguins, Price scored 53 points.

-Happy 66th birthday to former Penguins forward Nick Libett. Acquired in the 1979 offseason, Libett spent parts off two seasons with the Penguins. In 1979-80, Libett saw action in 78 games and scored 26 points. During the 1980 postseason, he appeared in five games and scored two points. He followed that up in 1980-81 by playing in 43 games and scoring 12 points. He was released in the 1981 offseason. In 121 regular season games with the Penguins, Libett scored 38 points.

Atlantic Division

-An overtime goal and three assists by Claude Giroux gave the Flyers a wild 5-4 win against the Sabres. Ilya Bryzgalov made 20 saves in the victory. Zack Kassian netted a goal and an assist for Buffalo.

-Sabres forward Nathan Gerbe left the game in the second period due to an "upper-body" injury after this hit from behind by Philadelphia's Marc-Andre Bourdon:

-Fight of the Night: Philadelphia's Zac Rinaldo versus Buffalo's Corey Tropp:

-The Flyers had to overcome a three-goal deficit to win last night.

-Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk returned to the lineup last night after being sidelined two weeks due to an abdominal injury.

-Flyers hall-of-fame goaltender Bernie Parent will play in the alumni game for the Winter Classic.

-Devils forward Travis Zajac resumed practicing for the first time since suffering an Achilles tendon injury in the offseason.

-Rangers defenseman Michael Sauer is day to day due to a concussion.

-Rangers forward and former Penguin Mike Rupp resumed practicing for the first time since undergoing knee surgery Nov. 9.

Southeast Division

-A goal and two assists by John Carlson led the Capitals to a 5-3 win against the Senators. Teammates Troy Brouwer, Jeff Halpern and Nicklas Backstrom each had a goal and an assist for Washington while Tomas Vokoun made 31 saves in the victory.

-Ovechkin appeared to spear Senators forward Chris Neil after Neil hit him in the corner:

-Neil actually got a diving minor after that play. Ovechkin was not penalized.

-"All I know is Chris Neil delivered a good clean hit and they both came up the ice and obviously Ovechkin didn't like it and showed his displeasure by spearing him." - Senators coach Paul MacLean.

-Cam Ward made 23 saves for the Hurricanes in a 5-3 win against the Oilers. Tomas Kaberle recorded two assists for Carolina which snapped a seven-game losing streak and won for the first time under new coach Kirk Muller.

-Oilers defenseman/expertise demander Andy Sutton left his feet and struck Hurricanes forward and former Penguin Alexei Ponikarovsky in the head. Ponikarovsky did not leave the game. Sutton received a two-minute minor.

-Hit of the Night: Sutton did manage to lay this brutal, legal shot on Carolina's Jeff Skinner:

-The Panthers acquired forward/enforcer Krys Barch from the Stars in exchange for forward prospect Jake Hauswirth and a fifth-round pick in 2013.

-Former Penguins forward Mikael Samuelsson is expected to play for the Panthers for the first time since he was acquired in a trade from Vancouver last month. Samuelsson has been sidelined due to various medical issues.

-Lightning forward Martin St. Louis is scheduled to appear in his 500th consecutive regular season game tonight against the Rangers.

Central Division

-The Blue Jackets hired former Penguins general manager/coach and Hockey Hall-of-Famer Craig Patrick as a senior advisor.

-Currently on a one-year, two-way contract, Predators defenseman Jack Hillen might be one of the NHL's best bargains.

-Blackhawks forward Dave Bolland is dealing with a nagging foot injury.

-The Blues demoted forward forward Evgeny Grachev to Peoria of the AHL.

Northwest Division

-Canucks forward David Booth will be sidelined four to six weeks due to a knee injury after this knee-on-knee hit from Avalanche forward Kevin Porter Tuesday:

-Porter will have a disciplinary hearing with the NHL today.

-Vancouver recalled forward Bill Sweatt from Chicago of the AHL and demoted forward Victor Oreskovich to Chicago.

-Wild forward Devin Setoguchi is sidelined indefinitely due to a "lower-body" injury.

-Flames goaltender Henrik Karlsson will be sidelined six to eight weeks due to a knee injury.

Pacific Division

-Stars defenseman Mark Fistric was suspended three games for a charging penalty which injured Islanders forward Nino Niederreiter Saturday:

-Kings forward Jason Williams is dealing with an apparent hand injury.

-Coyotes forward and former Penguin Paul Bissonnette is good people. With help from the Coyotes, Bissonnette brought 100 homeless individuals to a game and provided free food for them.

Patrick Division

-Former Flyers/Predators/Sabres/Blue Jackets defenseman Andy Delmore has joined Ritten of Italy's Serie A league.

I think might have been having "issues" in the Bruins game before the Kunitz hit.

He looked "off."

It was probably the worst game I have ever seen him play.

It will kill my fantasy team, but sit Sid for two MONTHS if need be...

Let's get this right.
