The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 5-3 win against the Rangers, Dec. 10, 1991.
Right winger Mike Gartner tied the game, 1-1, with a power-play goal against goaltender Tom Barrasso at 11:30. Center Mark Messier had the only assist.
A goal by defenseman Randy Moller put the Rangers up 2-1 at 14:21. Messier and defenseman Brian Leetch recorded assists.
At 4:50 of the second period, right winger Mark Recchi tied the game with a power-play goal on a rebound off assists from right winger Joe Mullen and defenseman Ulf Samuelsson.

Center Mario Lemieux scored the eventual game-winning goal at 10:59 off assists from Stevens and Mullen.
At 11:35, center Sergei Nemchinov scored the Rangers' final goal. Assists went to Gartner and left winger John Ogrodnick.
