The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 6-4 win against the Bruins, Dec. 19, 1991.
The Penguins traveled to Boston for the first time since the previous season's Wales Conference final. Right winger Joe Mullen opened the scoring 51 seconds into the game with a slap shot off the right wing against goaltender Andy Moog. Assists went to left winger Bob Errey and center Ron Francis.
At 4:03 of the first period, left winger Kevin Stevens scored off assists from Mullen and center Mario Lemieux to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead.
The Bruins got on the scoreboard at 8:39 of the period when left winger Dave Reid scored a shorthanded goal against goaltender Tom Barrasso. Left winger Bob Carpenter recorded the only assist.
At the 16:06 mark, former Penguins center Barry Pederson scored to tie the game, 2-2. The goal was unassisted.
Boston took a 3-2 lead at 9:30 of the second period when right winger Bob Sweeney scored off assists from Pederson and defenseman Ray Bourque.
The Penguins tied the game, 3-3, when Francis scored on a rebound at 17:12. Defensemen Jim Paek and Paul Stanton were credited with assists.
Just 1:36 into the third period, right winger Jaromir Jagr put the Penguins up 4-3 with a wrist shot from the slot. Center Jiri Hrdina and left winger Troy Loney had assists.
Less than three minutes later at 4:27, the Bruins tied the game, 4-4, when Bourque scored off an assist from Pederson.
Just 33 seconds after that, Jagr scored again with a slap shot from the left circle to give the Penguins a 5-4 lead. The goal was unassisted.
Right winger Mark Recchi secured the win with an empty-net goal at 19:21. Assists went to defenseman Larry Murphy and Hrdina.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 35 saves in the win.
