Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland will have a disciplinary hearing tomorrow morning with the NHL in regards to a hit he placed on Blackhawks forward Marcus Kruger last night.

At 8:54 of the first period, Kruger pushed a puck by Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis on the left wing boards of the Penguins zone and was struck in the head by Engelland.

The hit in question:

Engelland has never had supplementary discipline in his NHL career.

EN Says: In a perfect world, this is a suspension. Engelland struck Kruger's head. Period.

But given the NHL's staggering inconsistencies with regards to discipline, it's impossible to predict what will happen with this situation.

I'm guessing 1 or 2 games. And the word "launch" will be used more than once in Shanny's explanation.

Over the phone hearing? There's a cap on how long those suspensions can be, no?

While his hit certainly wasn't clean, it was less violent than Erik Cole's hit on Adam Larsson, and Cole wasn't suspended. Engelland does not have a history, so if he is suspended, I'm guessing only 1 game. I personally do not think he will be given any time though, only a warning.

There are 3 strikes against Engelland.

Left his skates.

Hit the head.

Hit him two feet from the boards into the boards.

I'll be shocked if he doesn't get a 2 game suspension or so.

Don't forget that the head has to be the principal point of contact and targeted. I didn't see either of those things. I'm thinking he gets a fine or a warning like Lucic did earlier in the season. Then again, it is the Penguins so perhaps I'm being naive to expect the same justice that everyone else gets.

I believe 4 games is the max suspension when they do the phone hearing.

Nope. Kruger was engaged with Dupuis. He never saw Engelland and had no idea he was coming.

Definitely a bad hit. However, clearly, England never intended for the hit to work out the way it did. He went into the boards himself as if he didn't anticipate the hit. Regardless, Still left his feet. England was jacked because of that tripping at the beginning of the period where the guy took his feet out and boarded him. He was slow getting up and stuff like that can end a guys career or lead to concussion just as easy...so.. Just saying.

Only a total yinzer would think what Deryk did was ok.

If someone did that to Sid, the same people excusing Engelland would be demanding he got the electric chair.

This one's easy, unfortunately. At least two games for all of the reasons stated above. Maybe Michalek will be ready to play for E.
