Penguins

-Deryk Engelland (above) will have a chat with NHL discipline czar Brendan Shanahan today.

-According to CSN Chicago, Blackhawks forward Marcus Kruger has a concussion.

-The Penguins had some fun at the extent of Simon Despres' wardrobe:

-Olivier Dame-Malka and Zack Torquata each had a goal and an assist for the Wheeling Nailers in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Elmira Jackals.

Atlantic Division

-In his first game back from a concussion, Claude Giroux had a goal and three assists for the Flyers in a 4-1 win against the Stars. Former Penguins captain Jaromir Jagr added a goal and an assist for Philadelphia while teammate Kimmo Timonen recorded two assists. Sergei Bobrovsky made 30 saves in the victory.

-Flyers coach Peter Laviolette and Stars forward Steve Ott had a bit of scuffle last night after Laviolette tried to return to his dressing room down the same rampway:

-“It’s disrespect of our building. Just let our team off. He obviously thought he has a higher power than everybody else and a little bit more arrogance. Of all the coaches in the whole NHL, that’s probably the first time I’ve seen that." - Ott on Laviolette.

-"I think it was important to get the first hit and see how you feel," he said. "I felt good after that, and it made me more comfortable." - Giroux on his return.

-With goaltender Al Montoya and forward David Ullstrom dealing with concussions and forward Brian Rolston placed on injured reserve due to a concussion, the Islanders recalled goaltender Anders Nilsson and forward Micheal Haley from Bridgeport of the AHL.

Northeast Division

-Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta is expected to return to the lineup tonight for the first time since being sidelined with a groin injury Dec. 2.

-The Canadiens signed forward prospect Michaël Bournival to a three-year entry-level contract.

-With forward Philippe Dupuis placed on injured reserve due to an "upper-body" injury, the Maple Leafs recalled forward Nazem Kadri (right) from Toronto of the AHL.

Southeast Division

-Lightning forward Martin St. Louis returned to the lineup after missing five games due to facial injuries.

-With forward Jeff Skinner placed on injured reserve due to a concussion, the Hurricanes recalled forward Riley Nash from Charlotte of the AHL.

-With forwards Mikael Samuelsson (back) and Marco Sturm (leg) dinged up, the Panthers recalled forwards Evgenii Dadonov and Michal Repik from San Antonio of the AHL.

-Capitals coach Dale Hunter's contract is scheduled to expire after the season.

Central Division

-Bryan Bickell and Victor Stalberg each had a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks who beat the Canadiens, 5-1. Brent Seabrook recorded two assists for Chicago while Corey Crawford made 20 saves in the win.

-Things haven't gone smoothly for new Canadiens coach and former Penguins forward Randy Cunneyworth:

-The Blackhawks placed forward Daniel Carcillo ("upper body") on injured reserve and recalled forward Brandon Pirri from Rockford of the AHL.

-Blue Jackets forward Cody Bass will miss the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury.

Northwest Division

-Roberto Luongo made 38 saves for the Canucks in a 4-2 win against the Red Wings. Jannik Hansen recorded two assists for Vancouver.

-Vancouver's Cody Hodgson pumped a rocket by Detroit's Jimmy Howard here:

-Detroit's Niklas Kronwall rocked Vancouver's Ryan Kesler with a big hit:

-"My only problem with the hit is that he doesn't stand up for himself afterwards. I think if you're going to hit guys like that, you're going to have to drop the gloves." - Kesler.

-Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 37 saves for the Avalanche in a 3-2 win against the Blues. Colorado has won seven consecutive home games.

-The Flames placed defenseman Brett Carson on injured reserve due to an "upper-body" injury and recalled forward Greg Nemisz from Abbotsford of the AHL.

Pacific Division

-Lauri Korpikoski and Ray Whitney each had a goal and an assist for the Coyotes in a 4-3 win against the Hurricanes. Jason LaBarbera made 34 saves in the win.

-"I've got to be the best player on the ice on a night like tonight, and I wasn't." - Hurricanes captain Eric Staal.

-Two goals by Logan Couture led the Sharks to a 7-2 rout of the Lightning. Brent Burns and and Patrick Marleau each added a goal and an assist for San Jose while teammates Ryane Clowe, Michal Handzus and Joe Thornton each recorded two assists. Antti Niemi made 22 saves in the win.

-Sharks forward Martin Havlat will be sidelined six to eight weeks due to a left hamstring injury. Havlat was injured after he fell off the bench Wednesday:

-San Jose defenseman Brent Burns is good people.

-The Coyotes recalled goaltender Justin Pogge from Portland of the AHL.

Also, looked like Kronwall left his feet to hit Kesler... so that means no suspension, right, Engo?

But of course Cunneyworth's Canadiens were routed last night: il ne parle pas français!

One thing worth noting is that Tampa Bay's 1-3-1 apparently ceased to be an issue as soon as they started losing. Overreaction much back then?
