-Happy 40th birthday to former Penguins defenseman Drake Berehowsky. Acquired at the 1995 trade deadline, Berehowsky appeared in four games in 1994-95 for the Penguins and failed to record a point. He played in one postseason game that spring and again failed to net a point. He was limited to one game and no points in 1995-96. He was released in the 1996 offseason. Berehowsky returned to the Penguins as a free agent in the 2003 offseason. After 47 games and 21 points in 2003-04, Berehowsky was traded to the Maple Leafs in exchange for Ric Jackman. In 52 regular season games with the Penguins, Berehowski scored 21 points.
-Happy 62nd birthday to former Penguins forward Rick MacLeish (right). Acquired midway through the 1981-82 season in a deal which sent Russ Anderson and a draft pick to the Whalers, MacLeish spent parts of two seasons with the Penguins. He finished that 1980-81 by appearing in 40 games for the Penguins and scored 25 points. In five playoff games that spring, he scored two points. Injuries limited him to six games and five assists in 1982-83. In the 1983 offseason, he joined the Flyers as a free agent. In 46 regular season games with the Penguins, MacLeish scored 31 points.
-Happy 43rd birthday to former Penguins defenseman Steve Poapst. A free agent in the 2005 offseason, Poapst's Penguins career amounted to 21 games and four assists. Midway through the season, he was traded to the Blues in exchange for Eric Boguniecki.
-Happy 41th birthday to former Penguins defenseman Cory Cross. Acquired midway though the 2005-06 season along with Jani Rita in a deal which sent Dick Tarnstrom to the Oilers, Cross' Penguins career amounted to six games and one assist that season. At the trade deadline, he was dealt to the Red Wings in exchange for a draft pick.
-Former Penguin Mike Rupp scored two goals for the Rangers in a 3-2 win against the Flyers in the Winter Classic. Fire Ray Shero. John Mitchell and Brandon Prust each recorded two assists for New York while Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves in the victory.

-The Islanders demoted forward Micheal Haley to Bridgeport of the AHL.
-The Devil have allowed a league-leading 12 shorthanded goals this season.
-An overtime goal by captain Daniel Alfredsson gave the Senators a 3-2 win against the Devils. Jason Spezza had a goal and an assist for Ottawa while teammate Erik Karlsson recorded two assists. Craig Anderson made 27 saves in the victory.

-Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec and defenseman PK Subban got into a fight during practice.
-The Bruins recalled forward Jordan Caron from Providence of the AHL.
-Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner resumed practicing for the first time since suffering a concussion Dec. 7.
-Capitals forward Alexander Semin is dealing with a cut on his right arm.
-The Capitals demoted forward Cody Eakin to Hershey of the AHL.
-The Panthers signed defenseman Mike Weaver (right) to a two-year contract extension worth a total of $3.6 million. He will have a salary cap hit of $1.8 million. He is in the final year of a contract with a cap hit of $900,000. In 39 NHL games this season, he has recorded nine assists.
-The Red Wings activated former Penguins forward Chris Conner (fractured right hand) from the injured reserve list and demoted him to Grand Rapids of the AHL.
-The Blackhawks signed forwards Mark McNeill and Phillip Danualt, both first-round picks in 2011, to three-year entry-level contracts.
-The Blues recalled defenseman Cade Fairchild from Peoria of the AHL.
-Taylor Hall and Ryan Smyth each had a goal and an assist for the Oilers in a 4-3 defeat of the Blackhawks. Jordan Eberle reccorded two assists for Edmonton while teammate Devan Dubnyk made 39 saves.
-Blackhawks forward Daniel Carcillo was ejected from the game for a dangerous hit which injured both himself and Oilers defenseman Tom Gilbert. The hit in question:

-Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the first-overall pick in last year's draft, left the game in the first period due to a shoulder injury.
-A shootout goal by captain Milan Hejduk gave the Avalanche a 2-1 win against the Kings. Semyon Varlamov made 31 saves in the victory.
-Andre Loktionov and the Kings busted out their purple throwback jerseys:

-The Oilers recalled forward Teemu Hartikainen from Oklahoma City of the AHL and demoted forward Lennart Petrell to Oklahoma City.
-A shootout goal by Michal Handzus gave the Sharks a 3-2 win against the Canucks. Antti Niemi made 27 saves in the victory. Cody Hodgson had a regulation goal and an assist for Vancouver.
-Coyotes forward Raffi Torres was suspended two games by the NHL for a hit to the head of Wild defenseman Nate Prosser Saturday. The hit in question:
-The Stars placed defenseman Sheldon Souray (ankle) on injured reserve and recalled defenseman Brenden Dillon from Texas of the AHL.
-Two goals and an assist by Flames forward prospect Markus Granlund led Finland to an 8-5 defeat of Slovakia.
-Lightning forward prospect Nikita Kucherov recorded an assist for Russia in a 2-1 overtime win against the Czech Republic.
-A goal by Hurricanes forward prospect Gregory Hofmann helped Switzerland beat Denmark, 4-3, in overtime.
