"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.

Today, we look at the Penguins' 3-3 tie with the Red Wings, Jan. 17, 1992.

The Penguins went into the all-star break with a tie at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Left winger Kevin Stevens opened the scoring 3:10 into the game and gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead with a goal against goaltender Tim Cheveldae. Assists went to defenseman Paul Coffey and center Mario Lemieux.

The Penguins took a 2-0 lead when center Ron Francis scored at 4:10 of the first period off assists from right winger Mark Recchi and defenseman Gordie Roberts.

Recchi scored at 14:45 to make it a 3-0 game. Francis and left winger Bob Errey were credited with assists.

At 2:45 of the third period, left winger Gerald Gallant scored the Red Wings' first goal of the game against goaltender Tom Barrasso. Left winger Shawn Burr and right winger Kevin Miller netted assists.

Right winger Ray Sheppard scored to make it a 3-2 game at the 8:27 mark off assists from rookie defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom and veteran blue-liner Brad McCrimmon.

A power-play goal by defenseman Steve Chiasson at 11:46 tied the game, 3-3. Centers Steve Yzerman and Sergei Fedorov had assists.

Notes:

-Barrasso made 30 saves in the tie.

-The three stars were 1.) Cheveldae 2.) Recchi 3.) Chiasson.
