-By way of Greg Wyshynski of Yahoo! Sports, former Penguins forward Jarkko Ruutu is making friends playing in Finland's SM-liiga:
-Former Penguins forward Bryan Trottier will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame.
-Happy 31st birthday to former Penguins forward Michal Sivek. Acquired along with Kris Beech and Ross Lupaschuk from the Capitals in exchange for Jaromir Jagr and Frantisek Kucera in the 2001 offseason, Sivek's NHL's career amounted to 38 games and six points with
the Penguins in 2002-03. During the 2004 offseason, he joined HC Sparta Praha of the Czech Extraliga.
-Happy 51st birthday to former Penguins defenseman Moe Mantha, Jr. (right) Acquired in the 1984 offseason in a deal which sent Randy Carlyle to the Winnipeg Jets, Mantha spent parts of four seasons with the Penguins. In 1984-85, Mantha appeared in 71 games and recorded 51 points. He followed that up in 1985-86 by setting career highs in games (78) and point (67). During 1986-87, Mantha appared in 62 games and netted 40 points. After 21 games and 10 points in 1987-88, Mantha was traded along with Craig Simpson, Dave Hannan and Chris Joseph in exchange for Paul Coffey, Dave Hunter and Wayne Van Dorp. In 232 regular season games with the Penguins, Mantha scored 168 points, 45th-most in franchise history.
-The Devils acquired former Penguins forward Alexei Ponikarovsky from the Devils in exchange for minor-league defenseman Joe Sova and a fourth-round draft pick in 2012. Ponikarovsky has appeared in 48 games this season and has scored 15 points (seven goals, eight assists). Scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after this season, he has a salary cap hit of $1.5 million.
-EN Says: This is a weird trade for the Devils. Ponikarovsky has all the ability in the world but can be a complete dog when put in a situation where he can succeed when it counts. Perhaps the Devils' structured system can benefit him, but his track record with playoff teams is abysmal. For the Hurricanes, the rebuilding process has started.
-This is a left over from Thursday, but check out this hit to head head by Islanders forward and former Penguin Tim Wallace on Flyers forward Sean Couturier:
-Wallace was not punished for the hit.
-EN Says: This is a perfect example of why ALL head shots should be banned. You can never truly judge intent. How can anyone other than Wallace know his intentions in that hit. It looks sneaky, but you don't know for sure. Intent isn't a factor in punishing fairly minor infractions such as delay of game penalties. Why does intent get weighed in on a matter as serious as head shots?
-The Rangers and the Bruins have a pretty big showdown today in Boston.
-“It feels good to have my normal, every day life back." - Senators forward Jesse Winchester on his recovery from a concussion suffered Dec. 20.
-The Senators recalled forward Stephane Da Costa from Binghamton of the AHL.
-The Bruins demoted forward Jordan Caron and defenseman Steven Kampfer to Providence of the AHL.

-Defensive Play of the Night: Staal steals a puck off Washington's John Carlson and setting up Jokinen for a shorthanded goal:
-Teddy Purcell scored two goals and led the Lightning to a 2-1 win against the Stars. Martin St. Louis recorded two assists for Tampa Bay while former Penguin Mathieu Garon made 27 saves in the victory.
-Jets forward Nik Antropov was fined $2,500 for a boarding hit against Sabres defenseman T.J. Brennan Thursday.
