Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek and Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will each have discplinary hearings today with the NHL over hits which occurred in Sunday's 4-3 Penguins' overtime win at Consol Energy Center.

Ovechkin's hit occurred at 4:05 of the second period when he left the ice to strike Michalek in the right wing corner of the Penguins' zone. According to its release, the NHL determined Ovechkin struck Michalek in the head.

The hit was not penalized.

At 8:36 of the second, Michalek struck Capitals forward Matt Hendricks in the back of the head with a forearm or elbow. Michalek was given an elbowing minor for the hit. The hit:

Ovechkin has one previous suspension in his career. Michalek has never received supplementary discipline in his career.

I don't get why there are people saying the hit on Hendricks was much worse, when Hendricks was going after the puck, put his head down and was almost bent over double (why do players do that when they know a hit's coming?), while the hit on Michalek by Ovechkin was a) a bit late, and b) Michalek was standing straight up and Ovechkin left his feet and went for the head.

With Hendricks there was nothing to hit BUT head.

Similar hits, both pretty clear head shots, similar suspensions, no? I'd say 2 games for Michalek, 3 for Ovechkin (seeing as he's a repeat offender). But then, Ovie's a poster boy, and wasn't his previous suspension for a different crime (knee-on-knee)? So he'll get off easy...

Ovie has actually been suspended twice before.

But he is not technically a repeat offender since his most recent suspension was more than 18 months ago.

I'm guessing 1-2 games each.
