Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek will not be disciplined for a hit to the head of Captials forward Matt Hendricks Sunday.
Michalek, who was given a minor eblowing penalty for the hit, underwent a disciplinary hearing over the phone with NHL executive Brendan Shanahan earlier this morning. In describing the play with media today, Michalek said, "It was a hockey play. It was a hit, I guess from behind. I had my hands up, I guess. We'll see how it goes."
The hit in question:
EN Says: Thankfully, Hendricks was not injured on the play. If he had suffered some sort of ailment, Michalek would likely have recieved a game or two. The NHL considers injuries when doling out discipline.
That's silly.
The action and not the result should be punished. Don't wait for an injury to occur. Prevent it come happening.
The NHL is far too reactive and not proactive with player safety.
It's still a garage league.
