"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 5-3 win against the Islanders, Jan. 25, 1992.
A power-play goal by right winger Joe Mullen at 3:52 of the first period against goaltender Mark Fitzpatrick tied the game, 1-1. Center Mario Lemieux netted the lone assists.
At the 10:33 mark, King scored on a power play to give New York a 2-1. lead. Assists went to defenseman Tom Kurvers and Turgeon.
Right winger Mark Recchi scored an unassisted shorthanded goal at 13:35 to tie the game again, 2-2.
At the 6:44 mark of the second period, Turgeon scored again on a power play to give the Islanders a 3-2 lead. Defenseman Uwe Krupp and Kurvers netted assists.
Just 58 seconds into the third period, right winger Jaromir Jagr's goal tied the game, 2-2. Defenseman Paul Stanton had the only assist.
Lemieux scored the game-winning goal late at teh 19:08 mark off assists from Jagr and left winger Kevin Stevens.
An empty-net goal by center Ron Francis with two seconds remaining in regulation sececured the win. Defenseman Larry Murphy collected the only assist.
Notes:
-Young recorded the win by making 23 saves.
-The three stars were 1.) Lemieux 2.) Turgeon 3.) King.
-Penguins defenseman Peter Taglianetti suffered a broken nose when he was hit in the face with a high stick by Islanders center Adam Creighton.
