The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-0 loss to the Jets, Jan. 28, 1992.
After a scoreless second period, left winger Darrin Shannon, a former Penguins' first-round pick, scored a power-play goal just 1:11 into the third period to give Winnipeg a 2-0 lead off assists from defenseman Fredrik Olausson and Phil Housley.
Winnipeg's third goal was scored by right winger Luciano Borsato at the 16:24 mark. Defenseman Shawn Cronin had the only assist.
A power-play goal by defenseman Housley late in the game at 19:16 finished the scoring. Assists went to Olausson and defenseman Teppo Numminen.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 17 saves in the loss.
-The three stars were 1.) goaltender Bob Essensa 2.) Housley 3.) center Troy Murray.

-Penguins center Mario Lemieux missed the second and third periods due to back spasms.
