"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.

Today, we look at the Penguins' 8-5 loss to the Islanders, Jan. 30, 1992.

The Penguins lost their third consecutive game at the Civic Arena. Left winger Troy Loney gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead 3:04 into the game with a goal against goaltender Mark Fitzpatrick. Center Bryan Trottier and defenseman Gordie Roberts recorded assists.

Left winger Rob DiMaio tied the game, 1-1, with a goal against goaltender Wendell Young late in the first period at 19:27. Assists went to defenseman Tom Kurvers and left winger Bill Berg.

Just over 20 second slater at 19:48, center Tom Fitzgerald scored to give New York a 2-1 lead off assists from left winger Benoit Hogue and center Ray Ferraro.

The Islanders took a 3-1 lead at 6:44 of the second period when center Hubie McDonough scored a shorthanded goal. Right winger David Volek and Fitzgerald had assists.

Right winger Jamie Leach's fifth goal of the season on a power play made it a 3-2 game at 10:29. Defensemen Paul Coffey and Paul Stanton recorded assists.

At 15:10, an unassisted goal by Hogue gave New York a 4-2 lead.

Just 17 seconds into the third period, King scored to make it a 5-2 game. Volek and center Pierre Turgeon had assists.

A power-play goal by Kurvers at 3:16 put New York up, 6-2. Assists went to Ferraro and Hogue.

Right winger Mark Recchi scored on a power play to make it a 6-3 contest. Left winger Kevin Stevens and Coffey had assists.

Loney scored his second goal of the game at 11:55 to narrow the lead to 6-4. Defenseman Ulf Samuelsson and center Ron Francis netted assists.

Less than 30 seconds later at 11:22, Trottier scored to make it a 6-5 game off assists from Coffey and Stevens.

Turgeon secured the win at 17:55 with a goal off assists Volek and Berg.

Fitzgerald scored an insurance goal in an empty net at 19:43. Hogue had the only assist.

Notes:

-Young made 25 saves in the loss.

-The three stars were 1.) Hogue 2.) Loney 3.) Volek.

-Center Mario Lemieux missed the game due to a back ailment.

-The Penguins signed general manager Craig Patrick to a five-year contract extension.
