Penguins-Adding Cal O'Reilly (right) has the look of a classic low-risk, high-reward move by Ray Shero.
-The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins signed forward Matt Rust and defenseman Cody Wild to AHL contracts, signed forward Cody Chupp to a professional try-out agreement and recalled Ryan Schnell from Wheeling.
-Happy 44th birthday to former Penguins defenseman Frantisek Kucera. Kucera came to the Penguins at the 2001 trade deadline in a deal that sent a sixth-round pick to the Blue Jackets. He appeared in seven games for the Penguins that season and recorded two assists. In the 2001 offseason, he was traded to the Capitals along with some other guy in exchange for Kris Beech, Michal Sivek, Ross Lupaschuk.
-David Clarkson had two goals and an assist for the Devils in a 5-3 victory against the Canadiens. Dainius Zubrus added a goal and two assists for New Jersey while captain Zach Parise added two goals. Martin Brodeur made 27 saves in the victory.
-Devils defenseman Adam Larsson left the game in the third period due to a back injury.

-Two goals by Wayne Simmonds led the Flyers to a 4-1 win against the Predators. Claude Giroux added a goal and an assist for Philadelphia while teammate Ilya Bryzgalov made 26 saves.
-Defensive Play of the Night: Philadelphia's Matt Read stripping the puck off Nashville's Kevin Klein and scoring a breakaway goal:
-The Rangers demoted forward Wojtek Wolski and defenseman Jeff Woywitka to Connecticut of the AHL for a conditioning assignment.
-The Sabres demoted defenseman Brayden McNabb to Rochester of the AHL.
-Cam Ward made 47 saves for the Hurricanes in a 3-0 shutout of the Bruins. Brandon Sutter had a goal and an assist for Carolina which swept the season season against Boston, 4-0-0.
-Kyle Wellwood's overtime goal gave the Jets a 2-1 win against the Lightning. Blake Wheeler added a goal and an assist for Winnipeg while teammate Ondrej Pavelec made 31 saves.

-Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien returned to the lineup for the first time since suffering a knee injury Dec. 23.
-The Capitals acquired defenseman Kevin Marshall from the Flyers in exchange for minor league forward Matt Ford. Washington also acquired forward Mike Carman from the Avalanche in exchange for minor league defenseman Danny Richmond. Marshall, Carman and forward Cody Eakin were demoted to Hershey of the AHL while forward Keith Aucoin was recalled from Hershey.
-Shootout goals by Pavel Datsyuk and Jiri Hudler gave the Red Wings a 4-3 win against the Canucks. Danny Cleary had a regulation goal and an assist for Detroit while teammate Brad Stuart recorded two assists. Jimmy Howard made 22 saves in the victory.

-The Blue Jackets activated forward Jeff Carter (shoulder) from injured reserve and placed defenseman Nikita Nikitin (knee) on injured reserve.
-Former Predators/Canucks/Bruins/Hurricanes and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defenseman Wade Brookbank has joined the Rockford IceHogs, the Blackhawks' AHL affiliate.
-Sam Gagner exploded for a franchise-record eight points (four goals, four assists) and led the Oilers to an 8-4 rout of the Blackhawks. Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall each added a goal and three assists for Edmonton while teammate and former Penguin Ryan Whitney collected a goal and two assists. Fire Ray Shero. Devan Dubnyk made 43 saves in the victory. Patrick Sharp scored two goals for Chicago.

-Gagner now shares the franchise record for points in a game with hall-of-famers Paul Coffey and Wayne Gretzky.
-The last player to score eight points in a game was Mario Lemieux in his famous five goals/five different ways game against the Devils, Dec. 31, 1988:
-Niklas Backstrom made 37 saves for the Wild in a 1-0 shutout of the Avalanche. Colorado has lost four consecutive games.
-Save of the Night: Colorado's Jean-Sebastien Giguere denied Minnesota's Cal Clutterbuck despite having the Wild's Kyle Brodziak crash into him:

-Patrick Marleau, Joe Pavelski and captain Joe Thornton each had a goal and an assist for the Sharks in a 5-2 win against the Stars. Brent Burns recorded three assists for San Jose while teammate Logan Couture added two assists. Thomas Greiss made 19 saves in the victory. Steve Ott collected a goal and an assist for Dallas.
-Ott's goal came off the stick of Sharks' defenseman Dan Boyle who was a little to aggressive with a stick on puck play:
-A day after it appeared the Kings benefitted from a clock error in a last second 3-2 win against the Blue Jackets, Kings general manager Dean Lombardi defended the equipment saying:
-Ducks forward Jason Blake is dealing with a left foot injury.
