"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-3 loss to the Rangers, Feb. 5, 1992.
At 5:11 of the first period, defenseman Paul Stanton scored to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead off assists from Trottier and right winger Mark Recchi.
The Rangers got on the scoreboard just over a minute later at 6:36 when center Darren Turcotte scored against goaltender Tom Barrasso. Assists went to defenseman Normand Rochefort and right winger Paul Broten.
New York tied the game, 2-2, at 3:04 of the second period when Turcotte scored his second goal of the game off assists an assist from defenseman James Patrick.
The Penguins reclaimed a 3-2 lead when Recchi scored a power-play goal at the 7:04 mark. Left winger Kevin Stevens and Trottier were credited with assists.
Just over a minute later at 8:25, right winger Tim Kerr tied the game, 3-3, with a power-play goal off assists from Patrick and defenseman Brian Leetch.
Left winger Adam Graves scored a shorthanded goal at 8:31 of the third period to make it 4-3. Center Mark Messier and defenseman Jeff Beukeboom had assists.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 32 saves in the loss.
-The three stars were 1.) Turcotte 2.) Graves 3.) Trottier.
-Trottier's goal was his 1,400th career NHL point.
