The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-3 loss to the Kings, Feb. 8, 1992.
The Kings tied the game, 1-1, at 8:23 of the first period when center Wayne Gretzky scored a power-play goal against goaltender Tom Barrasso. Assists went to former Penguins deefenseman Marty McSorley and right winger Jari Kurri.
Gretzky scored his second goal of the game at 14:21 off assists from Kurri and defenseman Rob Blake.
The Penguins tied the game, 2-2, when right winger Mark Recchi scored on a power play. Stevens and former Kings defenseman Larry Murphy had assists.
McSorley scored at 4:33 mark of the third period to regain the lead for Los Angeles, 3-2. Left winger Luc Robitaille and defenseman Brent Thompson recorded assists.
The game was tied again, 3-3, when left winger Phil Bourque scored at 13:58 off assists from left winger Troy Loney and Murphy.
Robitaille scored the eventual game-winning goal on a backhander late in the game at 19:17. Assists went to left winger Mike Donnelly and center Corey Millen.
