FIRST PERIOD
19:27: Off a drop pass by Neal in the neutral zone, Martin has makings of a pseudo-breakaway. He snaps off a wrister from the high slot but a stick check by Francois Beauchemin deflect it out of play.
18:09: Off some hard work down low by Dustin Jeffrey and Cal O'Reilly, Steve Sullivan flings a wrister on net from the right wing. Hiller gloves it easily.
17:16: Lubomir Visnovsky flings a wrister at the cage from the right point. Kris Letang is in front and blocks it.
14:34: Deryk Engelland golfs a loose puck at the right point wide on the near side of the cage.
13:33: Jordan Staal. Goal scorer. Dupuis wins a puck battle against Toni Lydman the boards at the left point of the Penguins zone. He pokes it up ice to the neutral zone. Staal picks it up and coast into the offensive zone on the right wing with Cooke on a two-on-one against Brookbank. Staal moves in on net, elects to shoot and whips a sick wrister over the left shoulder of Hiller. The puck hits the back bar in the net and pings out. The official points at the net immediately. What a play by Dupuis on Lydman. Dupuis gets the only assist. The "Woo-Hoo!" song is played. Penguins 1-0.
12:27: Park has a a wraparound attempt from the left side of the cage fended off by Hiller.
11:21: Visnovsky drives a slapper from the right point. Fleury fights it off. Blake is in front jabbing away the rebound but can't punch it by Fleury's right leg.
10:38: Visnovsky is firing at will. He cranks a slapper fro mthe ri ght point which Fleury boots out.
10:18: Malkin gallops his way through the Ducks' defense, pushes the puck to the right of the crease and deals a backhanded pass to Niskanen in deep on the left wing. The timing is a little off and Niskanen misses the puck. That could have been pretty.
10:04: Niskanen controls the puck at the left point, holds it then deals a pass to Malkin above the right circle. Malkin drives a big one-timer on net. Hiller eats it up.
8:47: Beauchemin wires a slapper from the left point. Fleury gloves it.
8:43: Off a faceoff win by Rod Pelley in the right circle, Beauchemin booms a one-timer over the net.
7:58: Off a give and go with Dupuis, Cal O'Reilly strikes a one-timer from along the goal line on the right wing. Hiller kicks it out.
7:22: Lydman chops a slapper from the right point. Fleury kicks it out despite traffic.
7:01: Engelland booms a slapper from the left point. Hiller eats it up. Ducks coach and former Capitals bench boss is shown on the video board. He gets booed. He seems indifferent to the reaction.
5:32: Michalek is in deep on the right wing, takes a pass in the right circle, goes behind the net and attempts a wraparound. Hiller is able to hustle to his right and kicks it out. What a save!
4:36: Letang shuffles a wrister from the right point on net. Hiller eats it up.
4:23: Off a horrendous turnover by Visnovsky in his own zone, Cooke blasts a slapper on net from the left point. Hiller kicks it out. Visnovsky owes Hiller a beer.
2:23: Matt Beleskey snaps off a wrister from above the left circle. Fleury boots it out.
1:27: Letang lofts a wrister from the right wing. Hiller fights it off.
0:02: Malkin picks up a loose puck in the right neutral zone, gains the offensive zone, jumps by a check from Getzlaf and whips a wrister on net from the left circle. Hiller eats it up.
0:00: End of period. Penguins 1, Ducks 0.
FIRST INTERMISSION

-That was a pretty strong but boring period for the Penguins. They dominated puck possession in the Ducks' zone and got the majority of quality scoring chances.
-So far so good for the new defensive pairings with Niskanen-Engelland and Martin-Michalek. All four didn't seem to make a mistake and Niskanen, Martin and Michalek each had prime scoring chances.
-Almost all of the Ducks' shots are coming from the point. That's not going to work unless they bring back this guy:
-The Penguins have a 13-8 lead in shots.
-Letang leads the game with three.
-Blake, Visnovsky and Beleskey each lead the Ducks with two.
-Beauchemin leads the game with 8:56 of ice time.
-Orpik leads the Penguins with 7:38 of ice time.
-The Penguins have a 12-8 lead in faceoffs (60 percent).
-Malkin is 4 for 5 (80 percent).
-Getzlaf is 4 for 8 (50 percent).
-Brookbank, Lydman and Beleskey each lead the game with two blocked shots.
SECOND PERIOD
19:26: Malkin comes out flying, he races up the right wing, charges behind the net, emerges to the left of the crease and whips a backhander on net. Hiller kicks it out.
18:43: Blake tries to push a puck up the right wing but is knocked off the puck thanks to a solid hit by Orpik in the neutral zone.
17:59: Visnovsky drives a slapper from the top of the slot. FLeury makes the save. Blake is right on the crease and chops a backhander on net. Fleury kicks it out . Tough save.
17:37: On a delayed penalty, Perry carries the puck around from the back of the Penguins net, circle to the slot and whips a wrister from the slot. Fleury is swimming in his crease and kicks it out with his left leg. Another big save.
17:35: Staal is called for hooking Perry. Craig Adams, Dustin Jeffrey, Martin and Michalek take the ice.
16:11: Cam Fowler rips a wrister on net from the right point. Fleury eats it up.
15:35: The Staal minor is killed. Solid effort by the Penguins.
14:58: Malkin collects a loose puck at the right point and booms a slapper. Hiller knocks it dead and covers.
14:35: Niskanen forces a pass from the neutral zone to Malkin on the right wing. Brookbank appears to break it up but the puck still just hops to Malkin's stick. Malkin races in on net and lifts a wrister which appears to clunk off the cross bar.
14:05: Malkin is called for tripping Nick Bonino near the Ducks' net. He pretty much slashed his legs out. Staal, Cooke, Orpik and Michalek take the ice.
13:16: After a series of passes at the point. Fowler drives a slapper from above the left circle, Fleury gloves it with ease.
12:13: Fowler takes a pass at the top of the left circle, winds up and booms a big slapper on net. Fleury is above his paint and gloves with is a with a snazzy glove save.
12:05: The Malkin minor is killed. The Ducks had a few decent point shots there but little else.
10:01: Attendance is announced as 18,482. It is the team's 237th consecutive sell-out.
8:11: Selanne controls the puck in the right wing corner of the Penguins' zone. He sees Malkin coming back on a backcheck. He tries to make a "tap-and-go" move to get by Malkin but Malkin sticks with him and steals the puck. What a defensive play.
6:36: Michalek takes a pass at the right point, winds up and cranks a slapper on net. Hiller eats it up.
6:08: The Penguins get their first power play of the game as Staal is slashed by Perry in the Ducks' zone. Malkin, Letang, Neal, Kunitz and Sullivan take the ice.
6:04: Letang attempts a one-timer at the left point and breaks his stick. That's the second time he's busted a twig this period.
4:55: Niklas Hagman gets sprung loose on a shorthanded breakaway. As Niskanen hounds him from behind, Hagman has a shot forehand kicked out by Fleury's right skate. Big save.
4:36: Niskanen booms a one-timer from the top of hte slot. Hiller fights it off. Kunitz is in front and backhands the rebound wide.
4:03: The Penguins turn the puck over again in the offensive zone as the Perry minor expires. Andrew Cogliano pushes the puck up the left wing creating a two-on-one with Getzlaf. He deals to Getzlaf who deals back to Cogliano. Cogliano snaps off a wrister which clinks off the left post. So close. Fans chant Fleury's name even though he didn't make the save.
2:04: Off a faceoff in the offensive zone, Letang sneaks up the right wing and attempts to put a little wrister on net. Visnovsky makes a nice strip on Letang before he can get a clean shot off.
0:51: What was that? Perry controls the puck to the right of the net. Michalek kind of drops to his knees and attempts to block the shot. Perry is able to drag the puck through his legs and snaps it under Fleury's left leg and int othe cage. That was ugly. Michalek.... we don't know what to say about his play there. And Fleury needs to make that save. Just brutal. Ryan gets the only assist. Ducks 1, Penguins 1.
0:00: End of period. Penguins 1, Ducks 1.
SECOND INTERMISSION

-One way to describe the bulk of this game:

-This has been a pretty stale 40 minutes of hockey. There's just not much going on. There have only been a handful of quality scoring chances for each team. And there's been very little hitting.
-Play evened out quite a bit that period. The Ducks seemed to have the majority of puck possession that period.
-The Ducks continue to fire away from the point. It's not yielded much for them.
-Malkin is flying around the ice and putting on a puck-handling display, but it's meant little in terms of offense.
-The Ducks have a 21-20 edge in shots.
-Michalek, Letang, Malkin, Fowler, Visnovsky, Beauchemin and Blake each lead the game with three shots.
-Orpik leads the game with 16:20 of ice time.
-Beauchemin leads the Ducks with 15:53.
-The Penguins have a 24-14 advantage in faceoffs (63 percent).
-Malkin is 7 for 11 in faceoffs (64 percent).
-Getzlaf is 5 for 11 (45 percent).
-Brookbank and Martin each lead the game with three blocked shots.
-During the intermission, M83's "Midnight City" which was used in this season's "24/&" is played:
THIRD PERIOD
18:09: Beauchemin flings a wrister on net fro the right point. Cogliano crashes in and chops the rebound. Fleury holds it out.
17:50: Cogliano drives a shot from the right circle. Fleury kicks it out and pokes the reboudn away with hsi stick.
16:28: Engelland chucks a wrister on net from the righ point. Hiller kicks it out. Kunitz ends up with the rebound and whips it on net from the right circle. Hiller fights that off.
15:20: Dupuis pumps a half slapper from the right point wide to the far side.
14:36: Cogliano whips a wrister on net from the right circle. Fleury fights it off. Visnovsky ends up with the rebound and lifts a wrister from the right circle. It strikes off the right side of Michalek's head. Michalek is on the ice in a heap as play is halted. Athletic trainer Chris Stewart attends to Michalek. He eventually recovers to his feet and makes his way tot he bench and the dressing room.
13:26: Niskanen snaps off a wrister from teh top of the slot. it htis a body inf ront.
13:06: Malkin races up the right wing, fight soff a check from Belesky and lifts a wbackahdner over the cage.
12:09: Wow. Just wow. Off a turnover in the offensive zone, Belesky pushes the puck up the right wing and flings a pass up the right wing to Selanne. Neal is the only Penguins player back and doesn't have a prayer. Selanne sneaks in off the left wing, goes to his backhand and sneaks a backhander by Fleur on the blocker side. What a sneaky, sneak move by one of the all-time greats. That was a pretty ugly defensive breakdown by the Penguins. Beleskey and Brookbank each get assists. Ducks 2-1.
11:05: Michalek returns to the ice.
8:50: Off a turnover in the neutral zone, Malkin gallps into the offensive zone but has the puck stolen by Perry on a nice back check.
8:02: Letang lugs the puck int othe offoenive zone and taps a drop pass to Dupuis on the right wing. Dupuis takes the pass, winds up and cranks a slapper off the backside of Letang. Yeoch.
6:41: Lydman chops a slapper from the right point. Fleury appears to fight it off.
5:30: O'Reilly controls the puck in the right corner and deals a pass to Engelland at the right point. Engelland winds up and booms a slapper. It hits a body in front and tickles in on net. Hiller covers to freeze play.
4:33: Perry races up the right wing past a backcheck of Staal and snaps off a wrister hwich squeaks through Fleury's gear. JUUUUST before it crosses the goal line, Letang is Johnny on the spot and sweeps it away from the goal line. Whew!
4:13: Letang hustles up the right wing and puts a wrister on net. Hiller kicks it out.
2:43: Oof. Bad penalty to take. Selanne controls the puck int he left wing corner. Kunitz gives him a slash to the wrists. An official immediately raises his hand. A legit call. Two mintues for Kunitz. This is do or die for the penguins. Orpik, Michalek, Staal and Dupuis take the ice.
1:30: Selanne pushes the puck up the right wing but is stripped by Cooke who backhands it to center ice.
1:03: Orpik rattles Ryan into the right wing corner boards of the Penguins' zone with a big hit.
0:43: The Kunitz minor is killed.
0:35: Fleury leaves the ice for an extra attacker.
0:32: The Penguins go offsides. Dan Bylsma calls a timeout to get his team organized.
0:09: Malkin has a wrister from the circle blocked by Lydman.
0:00: End of game. Ducks 2, Penguins 1.
POSTGAME

-This was a wasted two points for the Penguins. They were fresh coming off two days of rest. The Ducks were worn out coming in to town at 3 a.m. after a tough win in Minnesota. The Penguins should have run this team out of the building. The Ducks hunkered down and gritted out a victory.
-Give the Ducks credit. They showed some resolve. They had ever reason to lose this game but found a way to shut down the Penguins' explosive top line and capitalized on a few of the Penguins' mistakes.
-Anaheim did a pretty solid job of limiting the quality of the Penguins' scoring chances. With the execption of the first period, the majority of the Penguins' scoring chances came from the outside. A lot of junk perimeter shots. Anaheim didn't let the Penguins generate much down low.
-It's difficult to blame Mar-Andre Fleury for this loss since his team only provide him with one goal, but if he makes a save on Corey Perry at the end of the second period, this is a different game.
-It shouldn't all be on Fleury though. If Evgeni Malkin buries a shot with just over five minutes left in the second instead of putting it off the cross bar, the Penguins probably have a 2-0 lead going into the third period.
-The Penguins' bottom two defensive pairings were all over the place after the first period. The Penguins mixed and matched Paul Martin, Zbynek Michalek, Matt Niskanen and Deryk Engelland throughout the final 40 minutes of the game. They dont' seem too comfortable with any pairing of those four.
-How many players in the world would dare try the move Teemu Selanne busted out on his goal? That was just sick. As Bruce Boudreau said after the game, there's a reason he has a "jillion" goals (556 to be exact).
-The Penguins defensemen got caught cheating on that play and poor James Neal, a forward, was left alone to defend Selanne. After the game, Selanne admitted he new Neal was back there and tried to exploit it. Said Selanne, "Oh absolutely. I knew they were controlling the puck pretty good in our own end. The (defensemen) were joining the rush and were really deep. We got the turnover, I knew there was not many guys back there. (Ducks forward Matt Beleskey) made a great pass. It was good to see that go in."
-Beleskey, who forced the turnover by the Penguins in the Ducks' zone and fed the puck to Selanne, simply said, "He does what he does. Score goals. Big goals.”
-The Ducks had a 29-26 lead in shots.
-Kris Letang, Lubomir Visnovsky and Francois Beauchemin each led the game with four shots.
-Brooks Orpik led teh game with 24:39 of ice time.
-Beauchemin led the Ducks with 24:10.
-The Penguins had a 30-20 advantage in faceoffs (60 percent).
-Jordan Staal and Malkin were each 8 for 15 (53 percent).
-Saku Koivu was 8 for 19 (42 percent).
-Tony Lydman led the game with five blocked shots.
-Paul Martin led the Penguins with three.
-Selanne scored his 656 career goal and moved into a tie with NHL executive Brendan Shanahan for 12th place on the NHL's all-time goal-scroring list.
-Boudreau is now 13-1-3 all-time against the Penguins.
