The Penguins, hockey and more, by the PG's Seth Rorabaugh. |
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2011-12 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1991-92 season which led to the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 3-3 tie with the Flyers, Feb. 16, 1992.
Philadelphia responeded just under 10 minutes later when defenseman Steve Duchesne scored an unassisted power-play goal against goaltender Tom Barrasso at 13:22 of the first period.
Left winger Kevin Stevens reclaimed the lead for the Penguins at 3:09 of the second period with another power-play goal off a wrister from the right circle. Defenseman Paul Coffey recorded the only assist.
At the 9:07 mark, the Flyers tied the game again, 2-2, when right winger Kevin Dineen scored off assists from defensemen Garry Galley and Mark Howe.
Mullen's second goal of the game came at 4:34 of the third period and gave the Penguins a 3-2 advantage. Lemieux had the lone assist.
Another power-play goal of a rebound by right winger Rick Tocchet at the 7:54 mark tied the game again, 3-3. Left winger Mark Pederson and center Rod Brind'Amour recorded assists.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 25 saves in the tie.
-The three stars were 1.) Mullen 2.) Howe 3.) Stevens.
