-In a rare three-team trade, the Lightning dealt forward Steve Downie to the Avalanche in exchange for defenseman Kyle Quincey then shipped Quincey to the Red Wings in exchange for minor league defenseman Sebastien Piche and a first-round pick in 2012. In the final year of a contract with a salary cap hit of $1.85 million, Downie has 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists) in 55 games. In the final year of a contract with a salary cap hit of $3.125, Quincey had 23 points (five goals, 18 assists) in 54 games. In 22 games with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins, Piche has three assists.
-EN Says: For the Lightning, its just doing what it needs to do as a seller. It turned Downie (right) into a first-round pick, a positive move. For the Red Wings, they have always valued defensive depth and the regain a player who grew up in their system and is familiar with how things operate in Detroit. He's strong with the puck and is a solid skater. He can take regular assignments against top opposing forwards. For the Avalanche, we don't understand this move. They have a few players who can fill his role as an agitator. He offers some skill and can produce a few points, but this was hardly a vital need for this team which is battling to stay in the playoff race.
