Back to square one is the best way I can describe this situation from this end, so the best thing we can do is go through the list of guys who have been linked to this search and weed out those who aren't likely to be hired or haven't been interviewed so we can stop talking about them and move on:
Al Golden - Obviously, off the board, but without a doubt one of the top candidates when this process started.
Dana Holgorsen - He was a candidate of some degree but he is not in the mix at this point and that is all that matters to us. And just to be crystal clear about it and fair - he was not at the point where the key decision makers at Pitt were considering him or had taken the steps to begin looking deeper into his background and checking his references as we had previously reported.
Tom Bradley - Depsite a lot of people pushing for his candidacy, he has not yet, as far as I can tell from everyone I've talked to, even been granted an interview.
Frank Cignetti - He is in the same category as Bradley. The same person who told me this morning that Holgorsen is not in the mix said there isn't likley going to be any internal candidates. This of course cannot be verified because Pitt is not talking, but again, it was the first person who told me that Holgorsen's candidacy was being overstated so I have no reason to doubt it.
Sal Sunseri - Again, he is not on the radar and hasn't even been given an interview or even the courtesy of a "thanks, but no thanks"
Brady Hoke - He's publicly denied contact, which as we know means nothing because of the semantics and doublespeak and all, but more importantly it is well known the job he is posturing for and waiting for is at Michigan. This was actually said by his athletic director publicly and on the record, which is really a strange situation.
Teryl Austin - Put him in the category of guys like Cignetti, Sunseri and Bradley as guys who were holding out hope that they could get involved in the process and get an interview but so far, from what I understand, he hasn't been contacted. Austin, by the way, is rumored to be a candidate for the job as defensive coordinator at Texas.
Paul Rhoads - Has made it very clear he is not interested in leaving Iowa State at this time.
Mark Stoops - At this point, like a few other guys on this list -- his interest in the job hasn't yet been returned from Pitt.
Chris Petersen - Another coach who Pitt sent some back-channel feelers to who is (a) too expensive and (b) not leaving his current job for Pitt.
That leaves one guy who we know there has been some contact with, Miami (Ohio) coach Mike Haywood, left in terms of the known candidates who might still be a possibility. But like I wrote earlier, I have a hard time believing he will be the guy as there will be more names to come out over the next few days.
The other three names I was given by people of some degree of credibility as names to watch (though I can't verify contact with any of them yet) as the process goes forward were Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst and St. Louis Rams coach Pat Shurmur. And Oklahoma offensive assistant Jay Norvell, who does have ties to Steve Pederson but was recently promoted at Oklahoma.
Oh, and how can I forget this one other name - ESPN's Bruce Feldman posted on his Twitter that he "heard 61-year old former Syracuse coach Paul Pasqualoni, a PA native, may get an interview for the Pitt coaching vacancy."
All I can say about that one is this - no disrespect to Pasqualoni (who I thought did an excellent job at Syracuse and got a raw deal when he was fired, or pushed out, or made to retire, or whatever the spin was up there) --- but if Steve Pederson tried to hire a 61-year old guy who hasn't been a head coach since 2004 and who had at least four losses in seven of his last eight seasons -- including going 6-6 in his last two -- he should be escorted out of the Petersen Events Center and told to turn in his university ID.
So in short, the list of candidates from this point forward needs to be rebuilt as the guys who made contact with Pitt and haven't heard back by now aren't likely going to be getting in the mix and outside of Haywood, none of the other guys who have had some contact are in the hunt, either.

Paul, the Dokish guy mentioned Bronco Mendenhall but said he doubts that Pitt would pay what it would take. Any thoughts on that? Has his name been mentioned by anybody at Pitt? That's somebody that would make this all worthwhile. And how could would it be to have a coach named Bronco?

Life is what you make of it and the same can be said for College Football Programs.
I think that this Hire will speak volumes on where the AD believes (in it's heart of hearts) this program is headed. There is only one proven head coach, that graduates players, delivers a high powered offense, and runs a tight ship out there looking for a chance to coach again and from what you have reported this AD hasn't even expressed an interest in him.
I speak of Mike Leach. Yes he has baggage and an ego but most successful people do have an ego and that is exactly what drives them to be successful.
In regards to his baggage. There are the lawsuits but most lawsuits can and are settled out of court and so they need not be a distraction should the party that filed them (Leach) have an interest in them going away.
He worn out his welcome in Lubbock and that can happen (the divorce rate in the USA is right around 50%) but Texas Tech had a very nice ride while the guy was running the program and they sold a ton of tickets and were competitive with some of the biggest programs in the country.
If Leach is looking to redeem himself he would come in at the right price and if the AD really wants to win Big East titles they should look no further.
However should the AD want to play it safe and merely be competitive in the Big East and hire a coach that easy to manage then they will look to Joe what's his name from Anytown USA. (who could be good or maybe not so much)
If that is how this all works out then they should have just kept Dave W. and his staff as they all seemed to get along quite nicely.

Isn't this pattern why Pederson can't hire a football coach who is really good? He lucked out on Walt Harris. That process, as I recall, was much like this one. Apparently, Pederson failed to do any background work or secure the ball park funding he needed. Quite pathetic.

at this point in time as a loyal pitt fan you have to hold out hope that the current set of events is part of the process and sp has it under control. you have to believe that the plan was to hire golden and when that fell through sp merely shifted gears and has started to review plan b and plan c since that is how any person hiring any individual whether in athletics or business has their plans set. however my concerns are how the resignation,promotion to special asst to sp or outright firing of dw and the past hiring practices of sp are reviewed was there a plan in place? if not why? the university is at a crossroads and needs a great hire to reinspire the fan base...i am holding out hope that sp knows what he is doing...from all i am reading though me thinks that dw should have been given another year and perhaps a better plan should have been put in place to find a successor...

Ugh, I don't get Pederson's grand strategy - ready, fire, aim. First let's force out Coach Wanny and then figure out a list of possible candidates? Oh yeah, its December and a great time to lose commitments. Even if Al Golden was the 'guy', where need a backup list of good candidates. This is ridiculous - at this rate he'll be calling Walt Harris back from his OC job at California University of PA or Jackie Sherrill at his TV gig.

Paul - do you ever get the sense that Pederson and Nordenberg are really controlling the flow of information so you only hear what they want you to hear? Not trying to be a wise guy. I really don't know how these machinations work. But bringing in the headhunter firm makes me wonder if they put out enough information to distract and keep people away from the real target??
I'm hopeful that maybe the strategy here is that they get the fan base so frustrated with underwhelming candidates or blown results, that when Mike Leach is announced as the next HC, people will be so relieved that his "baggage" won't be a huge deal. I'd be thrilled. A guy that can win, that brings an exciting offensive attack, that has some fire, and let's not overlook the fact that he graduates players. There's a great opinion piece on Leach in the Washington Post of all places. It's easy to find via Google. There are two sides to every story and there's no doubt that the episode with the James kid was blown way out of proportion. And after watching the ESPN feature on SMU, I'd take anything Craig James says with a grain of salt.
At this point, Leach is the only possible candidate out there that interests me. I completely admit it's a dream and I don't think the brain trust at Pitt would have the stones to give him a chance. But I guarantee it would make headlines.

My hope, after the search for a new head coach is completed, is that I will never have to hear the idiotic statement “all Pitt has to do to be great again is to hire the next young, up-and-coming, hot-shot coach.” I am (or was) a Wannstedt fan and it would really annoy me when people would say this. Can we all agree that if it were that simple every school in the country would have a great team.
Not necessarily disagreeing with a Mike Leech hire, but don’t you wonder why both Florida and Miami passed on him.

I was on Parker Executive Search's website, and under the "current opportunities" tab, Pitt is not listed. Is this by choice, or does this suggest that the job is already closed?

Paul, why will they not consider Tom Bradley? He seems like a great fit. I live in PSU country and they are terrified that Pitt will take him. Pitt would own PA. I just don't understand why they will not interview him. I'm losing a lot of respect for Pitt. Who cares if he's a PSU guy. He's a proven coach and recruiter.

Well I for one love a good redemption story. If you read up on Leach, yeah he's a little odd. Has his eccentricities. So what? Read some stories on him and tell me if you think he was treated fairly by Texas Tech. I think he and the University president butted heads (imagine that)over his last contract and looked for a reason to fire him. The "mistreatment" of the James kid gave him all the ammo he needed.
And I'm a Pitt fan, but I still don't put Pitt in the category of Florida or Miami at this point in time.
Everyone's going to have their preferences. But of the names that are being tossed around, I don't think any are enough to re-energize a fan base. Imagine a Leach hire combined with next season's home schedule? Pitt season tickets might actually become a hot item.

Dave W is a very good man, who was not very successful, in any of his HC positions. I'm coming over to the Leach camp, just for the fun of it but without much hope, but it does sound like Haywood has at least been a successful head coach. At least as, if not more, successful than Al Golden? Correct me if I am wrong, please.

Paul - thanks for the updates...I'm enjoying the process and your coverage of it, even if its frustrating and full of half-truths and rumors. Your reporting style is refeshing and candid and you've helped me to better understand the program. Its my favorite thing to read in the "paper". Please ignore those who don't appreciate it - they are clearly in the minority. Nuff said on that.
I know absolutely nothing about Jay Norvell, but I do know something about hiring and the use of executive search firms. If Norvell is hired, it tells me one of two things is true:
1) Pederson completely ignored a proven process used by successful programs and companies and leaped to grab "a guy he knows" while wasting thousands of dollars on a retainer fee OR
2) SOMEHOW the best candidate just happened to be someone he's worked with before at Nebraska.
I'd say anyone associated with Nebraska right now should be off his list...if I'm Nordenberg I'd be concerned if my AD went that route. Pederson strikes me as someone too bright to make this search unnecessarily messy Further, I doubt Pederson is working alone on this one.

Beginning to believe Pitt may have dodged a bullet with the Golden thing. Good luck to Miami.
The Pitt search is beginning to look like there really was no master plan. Reaction to the blogosphere seems to have prompted the DW dismissal, and now that it is time to actually pull the trigger Pitt seems to only have a squirt gun.
Leach is the only choice out there that brings pizazz (much needed pizazz I might add) to the program. Maybe Pitt doesn't feel it needs that.
Not trying to be too melodramatic (ok, a little melodramatic) Pitt needs to hit a homerun here. Not only are they facing a constantly de-energized fan base, but the BE needs them to make a solid choice here. TCU not withstanding, Pitt is the linchpin in the BE (along with Syracuse). Cuse seems to be on there way back, but Pitt is still in need of a significant jolt.

Let's keep the circus atmosphere going. Here is an idea to boost season tix sales. In a few months, Pitt can partner with the Buccos during Piratefest and bring in former players to sign autographs. Give away chances to get Oval Jaynes Bobbleheads, Neil Diamond autographed copies of Sweet Caroline, you get the idea.... Throw in a has been band and they'll sellout every game!

1. Look at all the teams in teh C-USA, MAC, the WAC and Maybe even the (gulp) Sun Belt.
2. See which teams have good records
3. See if their coach wants to make more money.
4. Make him an offer he can't refuse
They kinda already did this with Golden and the Miami Ohio guy, but what about Tulsa, Toledo, Ohio, Hawaii, Fresno State, and maybe even Troy and FIU.

And for the record, Colin and I have worked together on this Holgorsen thing and Colin was the first to report it - yesterday, before the details started coming out, which sort of puts a dent in your theory that he was waiting around with it to make WVU look good, doesn't it?

Your blogs are making you, PG, and Pitt look bad... you need to be reined in by Micco. Love your enthusiasm but a little over the top at times.
Colin is not giving minute by minute details... whereas you are Paul. Totally unnecessary.
btw.. as you were reporting the plane trip was Holgorsen to visit Pitt... someone was blogging Holgorsen was visiting WVU... you either have bad sources or running too early without verification.

Does this raise the ante for Pitt? I assume he wasn't interested in Pitt due to the $$?

Pederson is doing to Pitt what he did at Nebraska.
It took him 40 days to get Callahan... now he missed on 2 candidates and nobody in the bag... are you kidding me.
Anyone who fires a coach should have 5-10 candidates ready to go... and name someone within 3-5 days.
So, that is your next story/blog... contact the Nebraska people...
Next, how many Pitt recruits will now consider WVU... especially the offensive types.

JoeD - It is not my job to make Pitt look good or bad or put heat on Steve Pederson. Believe me, he has plenty of that and you are right - it is a little bit strange that he made the move that he did with Wannstedt and didn't have someone ready to go.
All I can do is work to figure out who they are talking to, which is what I've done.
I can't tell you who the next coach is going to be but I can continue to work hard to try and dig and find out who is being considered.

that is how long it's been since Wannstedt announcement of 12/7. Will Pederson name someone by Christmas... who knows... lets see if it takes longer than 40 days and he brings in some NFL reject like he did at Nebraska.

*t looks like Pitt fired the wrong guy.... errr the wrong guy "resigned" What a joke this coaching search is turning out to be and what a joke Pederson is. Can't wait for more boring football next year. Mr. Nordenberg please fire Pederson before we get the next Paul Hackett.
Seems Pederson is more concerned about a coach who will make his players eat all their vegetables than one who can actually win games.

I would hire Tom Bradley or Teryl Austin as HC. They both WANT the job and can recruit. Keep Cignetti at OC and try to get Randy Shannon or Sal Sunseri at DC. To me, THAT would be exciting.

I swear, this chat gets stupider all the time. There is NO reason to believe that Al Golden or Dana Holgorsen were the first two people on Pitt's wish list. That is nothing but pure speculation. There is even less reason to believe that Pedersen got scooped by Miami and West Virginia. Does anybody have any proof that Pitt made either an offer that was turned down? It is not even definite that either was interviewed. We won't know for a couple years what kind of success Golden and Holgorsen will have at Miami and West Virginia..
I kind of like that Steve Pedersen is playing this little cat and mouse game..I suspect that he has his guy stashed away somewhere and will produce him at the proper time.

This is a blast!!! Pederson fires Wanny without a replacement lined up. Holgerson, a reputed womanizer and drunk, is their first choice, but he signs with WVU, our hated rival. So then it's on to Mike -put-him-in-a-dark-place Leach. Or Bradley, our former rival's defensive coordinator. This makes the Nits go wacko as they realize that demented Joe, who hasn't made a cogent decision in years, might be losing the brains of his program. In the meantime, the Pitt fans stew; Pederson perseverates, and the media have a field day.

Looks like Franklin (OC from Maryland with PA roots) is going to Vandy. He was an excellant candidate for Pitt. That makes 3 good candidates Pitt missed out on.
Also, if pay scale is an issue, WVU just raised the stakes for Big East football at $2mill/yr. The Pitt scale of 1.1 to 1.5 is no good and that is a reason they didn't get Golden or Holgorsen.
Another good candidate to consider it Kevin Sumlin of Houston... his salary is about $1million/yr.

Thanks Pittsburgh2California. And seriously Joe D, what did you tell Pederson in your email. I am sure he didn't respond, but I am curious as to what you suggest he do.
Also, you suggest that Pitt's failure to sign either Golden or Holgorsen is based on their failure to come up with a sufficient monetary offer. I still have not heard definitely that Pitt made either of the two gentlemen a job offer, let alone that it ever got to the point of negotiating financial remuneration. If you could, please share with the group from whom you have received such detailed information.

Bingram - A great point - the interview process is exactly that - a process. There are so many reasons why a guy who may be contacted, get an interview or even be on the short list isn't hired - and not all of them are negative or about money or because of incompetence.
Al Golden, for instance, spoke with Miami the day before Wannstedt was fired. He then had his second interview with Miami the day Pitt received permission to talk to him. In other words, he already had spoken to Miami twice and knew he was a finalist for the job before Pitt ever had a chance to talk to him and he made it clear to Pitt he was interested but he was waiting to see what happened in Miami. That has nothing to do with money or incompetence and everything to do with bad luck due to timing.
And then Holgorsen had some contact with Pitt but he also had contact with West Virginia. And as it turned out, he led some of the people around him to believe he was further along with Pitt than West Virginia for obvious reasons. And then by late Sunday night, early Monday we found out how good these sources were - all of them around him, by the way - because they pointed me to the fact West Virginia was the job he was actually most involved with and his contact with Pitt was not nearly as far down the road as he let on. It was at that point that our West Virginia writer Colin, who had begun to hear the same thing, and I were able to compare notes, and work to confirm the story and as a result the Post-Gazette had the scoop a full day ahead of time.
So in short, Pitt didn't lose Holgorsen because of money or his background or anything else that people are trying to say. It is just a matter of, like Golden, he had already found another job.

Chris Petersen from Boise is the best candidate possibly available (This guy wins with 2 star recruits and the Mountain West at present is not worse than the Big East...Just not auto BCS bid) Pederson and Nordenburg need to make a serious run at him (Even dye the field blue and gold...LOL). If not then they also need to make a run at Bronco Mendenhall at BYU or Utah's Kyle Whittingham...With proper $$$ and an easy path to BCS...ANYTHING is possible...Next tier picks?...FSU's Stoops or Tom Bradley...Mike Leach unfortunately does not have a chance...

**s a shame that Pitt is getting rid of a quality coach in Dave Wannstadt. After looking at the list of candidates it doesnt appear that any of them would do any better.Holgerson obviously didnt fit the mode and who wants a guy on the sidelines that looks like Clairabell the clown anyway. Any fan that thinks that bringing in a guy running a certain offense or defense knows little about what it takes as a head coach to get to the next level. The only candidate that appeals to me is Tom Bradley however whoever they bring in its not going to be like Johnny Majors and win a Nattional Championship in four years.Oh one more point Tony Dorset and Dan Marino were two impact players that come around every 10 or twenty years. It seems like the great teams can land one Vince Young, Cam Newton Terrel Prior ect.Thats why it got to be Tom Bradley hes the only logical choice for now.

Gottfried, Harris, corpulent guy from Houston, TX have nothing in common with Pitt and the results will continue to be mediocre. Was Tom Bradley even considered (Pennsylvania guy)? or Sal Sunseri (asst head coach - Alabama), or Pat Cavanaugh (NY Jets offensive coordinator)? We got lucky with Jamie Dixon and the fact his wife fell in love with Pittsburgh. Or we'd be on that treadmill too.
Dave Wannsteadt, did us proud. Maybe the MAC guy can recruit some 5'-9" defensive ends from Dayton to shore up the defense. Is Callahan available?
