Here is the official release with the bio of both Eddie Faulkner and Matt House - the newest Pitt football assistants hired by Paul Chryst.
House will coach the secondary and Faulkner will coach the running backs.
That leaves two open spots - a receivers coach - which from what I've been told by a number of people is most likely going to be former Penn State and NFL (mostly with Bears and Seahawks) receiver Bobby Engram from the 49ers staff (he is just listed as an offensive assistant) whenever the team is knocked out of the playoffs - and a defensive line coach, of which I've heard a couple of names, including one who is still tied up in the NFL playoffs, but none that jump off the page.
Those last two hirings will complete the staff and here is the information about these newest two coaches:
CHRYST NAMES FAULKNER AND HOUSE TO PITT COACHING STAFF
PITTSBURGH—Pitt head football coach Paul Chryst made two more staff appointments today, naming Eddie Faulkner running backs coach and Matt House secondary coach.
Faulkner joins Pitt after spending the 2011 season as running backs coach and special teams coordinator at Northern Illinois, where he helped the Huskies to an 11-3 record, the Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship and a GoDaddy.com Bowl victory. House spent the past four seasons in the National Football League working as a coaching assistant with the St. Louis Rams and Carolina Panthers.
“Eddie Faulkner and Matt House bring exceptional energy and diverse experience to our coaching staff,” Chryst said. “I know they are both incredibly excited about the opportunity to work for a great institution like the University of Pittsburgh. Eddie and Matt have already arrived at Pitt and will play important roles in helping us close out our recruiting class in strong fashion.”
As running backs coach at NIU, Faulkner produced All-MAC tailback Jasmin Hopkins, who rushed for 956 yards and 15 touchdowns on 187 carries (5.1 avg.). NIU boasted the nation’s No. 12 rushing attack with an average of 234.14 yards per game.
Overseeing NIU’s special teams, Faulkner’s punt coverage unit ranked second nationally, yielding just one yard per return. Huskies placekicker Mathew Sims was a first-team All-MAC performer while compiling a school-record 124 points (20-28 field goals, 64-66 PATs).
Prior to NIU, Faulkner spent eight seasons at Ball State (2003-10). Initially joining Brady Hoke’s BSU staff as a graduate assistant in 2003, Faulkner elevated to running backs and special teams coach before serving as the Cardinals’ offensive coordinator his final two years. He was Ball State’s interim head coach at the end of the 2010 season before his departure to NIU.
During his Ball State tenure, the Cardinals captured two MAC West Division championships and advanced to back-to-back bowl games for the first time in school history. The 2008 team went undefeated during the regular season as tailback MiQuale Lewis rushed for a Ball State record 1,736 yards.
Faulkner was a member of two Big Ten championship teams as a running back at Wisconsin from 1996-2000. A four-year letterman for the Badgers, he signed a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2001 before going on to a pro career with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League.
House served as a defensive quality control coach with the St. Louis Rams the past three seasons (2009-11). In 2008, he was a special teams assistant with the Carolina Panthers, who went 12-4 that year en route to the NFC South Division title and the fourth-ever playoff berth in franchise history. In addition to contributing to special teams, House also served the Panthers as a strength and conditioning assistant.
Prior to his NFL stint, House was defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator under Turner Gill at the University of Buffalo for two seasons (2006-07). In his final season at UB, the rising Bulls captured a share of the MAC East Division title. House’s pupils at Buffalo included four-time first-team All-MAC safety Davonte Shannon, a native of Jeannette, Pa., and graduate of Jeannette High. Shannon finished as the Bulls’ all-time leading tackler and signed a free agent contract with the Washington Redskins.
House additionally was defensive line coach at Gardner-Webb University (2005), where he helped develop consensus All-America defensive end Brian Johnston. The two-time Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Year would go on to be selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2008 NFL Draft.
House began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Michigan State (his alma mater) during the 2001 and ’02 seasons and worked with the Spartans’ defensive backs and special teams. He also was a defensive assistant at North Carolina for two years (2003-04) working with the secondary.
Chryst has now filled seven of the nine positions on his coaching staff. Those appointments include:
Bob Bostad: offensive coordinator/offensive line
Eddie Faulkner: running backs
Matt House: secondary
Dave Huxtable: defensive coordinator
Joe Rudolph: assistant head coach/quarterbacks
Chris Haering: linebackers
Jim Hueber: tight ends

Paul Chryst said basically that the special teams duties will be shared but I would imagine Faulkner, with his background, would be a candidate to have that written into his duties more clearly.

@pitt of dreams- it is not the dead period for recruiting. The dead period is from Dec 19 to Jan 3. It is however the dead period for Mr Zeise and this blog unfortunately.

Curious how good Pankey is anyway... according to his rivals profile, his max bench press is 250!!! he weighs 290.

The length of absence is pretty exceptional even for him.
Nothing in the PG from Zeise on either Caprara or Cromwell

Just about every beat writer for the PG looks like they just served a tour in Iraq. Bouchette looks like the most miserable guy in the world...literally. I wish these guys know how lucky they are to have a job that we all do inbetween doing our jobs...WRITING ABOUT SPORTS...
its the "dead" time for HS Recruiting is what I've read before...I wonder if papers in Texas, Florida or California even fathom that idea....The PG and Trib both drag their feet while covering hs sports...and the snipets they do provide seem so over-edited...They could provide so much more!

I do check out the Trib, and the Pitt football articles there are generally not much different. And if DiPola places regular updates in a free blog, he does a good job of hiding it because I haven't seen one since August.
I have no issues with Zeise's job.
Now, whether he is sick again, on his couch eating bonbons, or shipped off to some other assignment, I don't know.
But I wouldn't be surprised if it's the last option.
You might remember that during the first week of Pitt camp that Zeise was shipped off to Milwaukee to cover the Pirates. So the blog was maintained by a photographer.
And, if history serves true, Zeise will be assigned to cover WVU hoops in the post-season while Pitt spring camp starts. Just like last year.
Of course, this is from a newspaper who has two writers who voted for Jason White for the Heisman Trophy instead of Larry Fitzgerald.
There are plenty of sources for info on Pitt sports. And if you don't like the job the reporter and/or newspaper does on said job, coming over to the website and repeatedly posting on the respective blog isn't the best way to protest.

Waaahhh! Paul is a big boy, I'm very sure he can handle his chops being busted and a bit of good natured ribbing.
The reason folks keep coming here is because this is really the only place to get info on the program. Thru no fault of Paul's, Pitt football gets little to no coverage in the city. It's sad.

I'm guessing something is up with Paul. This is unusual by any standards.
At the very least I would expect him to simply note that I'm on assignment or sick or whatever as a matter of courtesy to his readers.
Contrary to what some above think, it's really not that hard to login from whereever you're assigned to post such a courtesy.

The coverage by Trib is far better than PG regarding Pitt football. I'm speaking of articles. Could careless about this blog. Just look at how many articles did Zeise write since Chryst was announced HC versus DiPaoulo... For the most part, Zeise just cuts/paste his article into this blog. C'mon Man!!

There's been a PZ sighting. I ran into him finishing my buddy Smitty's basement. He said the Post pays him by the word (we can all see how that's working for him). Since the Pitt PR Dept hasn't put out anything he hasn't been able to regurgitate it into "his" blog.

Hopefully the Bostad story will remain untrue even after it's decided whether Tice is staying or leaving the Bears.
On a side note... still thinking something is up with Paul Zeise.
A suspension might not necessarily cover tweets.
Hopefully, he'll clear up the mystery as some point.

btw...
beavercountytimes did article on Shell...
allegedly lost 20lbs due to BB... told you he was chubby and slow... I estimated 225-230.
anyway, sounds like he plans on enrolling in summer classes and be in dorm rooms in June.

I know you guys have had (some) coaching issues over the past 12-13 months, but.. a coach leaving less than 30 days after arriving? Woah, Nellie! Reportedly Post Gazette Reporter Paul Zeise has been "suspended" from duties with the newspaper.
Again reportedly the suspension is a result of comments posted by Zeise in response to criticism expressed by readers of his blog Pitt Redshirt Diaries.
Although the story remains completely unconfirmed, Post Gazette Veteran Columnist Bob Smizik is said to be ready to go to print with his own headline confirming the story to be true in his own blog Community Voices.
Smizik supports his decision to run with the headline confirming the unconfirmed Zeise suspension.
Smizik was earlier quoted in a similiar headline controversy involving the unconfirmed report of newly-hired Pitt Offensive Coordinator Bob Bostad leaving for a job with the Chicago Bears saying "If they (the readers) really are confused all they had to do was read the next sentence."
Having been stung by the errant Smizik headline, loyal readers of Pitt Redshirt Diaries are said to be taking a "wait and see" approach while eagerly awaiting confirmation or denial of the reported Zeise suspension either by the Post Gazette or Zeise himself.
Meanwhile, Zeise reportedly continues to tweet from his twitter account which gives calm to those concerned that possibly a health issue and not a suspension was responsible for Zeise's now eight day long absense.

There is some truth to Bostad... simply put... he is a candidate (#1) for the chicago job... if Tice stays with Chicago, more than likely will get offered the job and more than likely will take the job.

Agree on Bostad. But Smizik was irresponsible in writing the headline he did. Obviously nothing final.
Of course, Smizik refuses to admit he was wrong in any way. Must be tough living above reproach.
Hoping Bostad either does not get the job or elects to stay on with Chryst.
Would be a real punch in the gut... and that's something we surely don't need right now.

The latest information on the Bostad story... ESPN reporting he is one of five or six names being considered for OL coaching position.
Given this, it's seems pretty obvious to me the only right thing for Bostad to do is to take his name out of the mix.
He should do so out of the commitment he made to both Chryst and Pitt.
Anyway, it's not exactly apples to apples. Stepping up to Offensive Coordinator would seem like a good career move to me. The difference would be a small jump in pay and living in Chicago versus the Burgh.
According to ESPN, there is some "fluidity" in the mix as Mike Tice is scheduled to interview for the HC position for the Oakland Raiders on Tuesday.
It's believed that if Tice leaves Chicago for Oakland, Bostad will not get the job since Tice is his connection.
But what if Tice gets the job in Oakland, does that mean Bostad might then consider following him there?
The right thing for Bostad to do right now is to simply take his name out of the running in Chicago and stick with the choioe he's made.
It could turn out to be the best career decision he could make.
It's certainly the best character decision.

I don't see Bostad pulling his name out of the hat... pay is probably about the same as OC for Pitt. This isn't the SEC!!!
Also, Madison WI is about 2.5 hrs from Chicago!! So, Chicago would be close to family.
Bostad has Chryst blessing to pursue the position.
However, doesn't mean I'm routing for Bostad to get the position...

Jevonte Pitts is no longer a committ..
that is a good thing...
if you all recall, Lafayette Pitts played Graham putting Pitt v Rutgers.. it was a quid pro quo... for him to sign Pitt LOI they needed to give Javonte a ship!! Javonte didn't qualify... so he was back this year. don't know why he is off the list again.
I did not appreciate the quid pro quo that Lafayette was playing... glad to see a ship wasn't wasted!! Lafayette is good... but not that good that Pitt needs to roll over to his demands!! Javonte is not a D-1 prospect..

I don't think losing Corey Jones is a big deal... I don't think he is D1, BCS quality and Toledo is probably the right fit for him.
He is 5'9", 165...

I read Revis and Baldwin were at Pitt BB game this past weekend... as were Chryst and many recruits. Hopefully Chryst uses these 2-1st round draft picks to assist in landing some of these recruits.

Cook - Pitt was the only other BCS school to offer
Pitts - only got a ship offer because of his cousin although he is listed as the #21 prep school player in the nation.
Pankey - needs a lot of work if you read up on him, and he may still end up at Pitt.
Jones - How many 5'8" WRs do we need?
Denman - family lives near Rutgers and he's already chosen 3 different colleges.
The biggest worry should be that only one player has committed so far, not that guys are decommitting. And that Bostad is probably leaving (although I don't understand why he would leave since he is the OC here and only the OL with the Bears)
I would be shocked if Holtz went on Pittsburgh TV and announced for MSU. That would take some serious jock-strap balloons to do that.

I think the software automatically pulls blogs from the main sports page if they are inactive for 10 days or so. It has happened to Zeise's blog before. Just embarassing.
Also, Tice is out of the running for the Raiders job, so he will stay on as the Bears' offensive coordinator. We'll have to see how that impacts Bostad.

Wish it weren't true, but it looks like Bostad is heading to Chicago.
Denman opted out of Wisconsin for Rutgers. In making his decision all he talked about was not having any relationship with Badger coaching staff since Chryst and Bostad left.
If Bostad were staying, it makes sense that Denman would have picked Pitt because of the value he obviously places on having Bostad as his coach.

That is 100% accurate. I know a guy who speaks to him often. That is not a joke. From what I was told, he was shoveling snow, slipped on the ice, and landed on his face and his mouth is all jacked up. He is supposed to get surgery in the next day or so.
